Dust jacket has edge and corner wear spine has light creasing light soiling on rear cover price clipped.<br /><br />Born in Chaux-de-Fonds Switzerland in 1887 Blaise Cendrars ran away from home when he was just fifteen to work for a jewel merchant. He traveled with the merchant through Russia Persia and China. Cendrars who was educated in Naples Italy finally settled in St. Petersburg to work as an apprentice to a clockmaker. Fighting for the French in World War I Cendrars lost his right arm but taught himself to type left-handed. Cendrars wrote his first long poem Easter in New York in the United States. And his first novel <i>L'Or</i> which focused on the California gold rush was eventually made into the American movie Sutter's Gold. Cendrars chronicled his experiences in Hollywood in articles for Paris-Soir; the articles were published as a book Hollywood: Mecca of the Movies in 1995. Other Cendrars titles include <i>Christmas at the Four Corners of the Earth</i> <i>Rhum</i> and <i>Lice</i>. Cendrars's novels earned him a worldwide reputation and one of France's highest literary honors the Prix Litteraire de la Ville de Paris. Considered a prime catalyst of the modernist movement Cendrars also wrote poems plays and short stories. Cendrars died in 1961 at the age of 74. Peter Owen hardcover

Débarqué à Paris en 1910 Moïse Kisling devait bientôt faire la connaissance de Cendrars : « À cette époque les peintres et les écrivains c'était pareil. On vivait mélangés avec probablement les mêmes soucis ; on peut même dire que chaque écrivain avait son peintre » dira Cendrars. Si Kisling n'est pas « son » peintre il va devenir à l'occasion de la guerre l'un de ses plus proches amis. Lorsqu'éclate le conflit Kisling étranger comme Cendrars s'engage dans la légion ; comme son frère d'arme il sera grièvement blessé à la ferme Navarin au cours de la grande offensive de Champagne. The second cover in bright red executed by Raoul Dufy resembles the railway timetables that one slipped into one's pocket: ""Le nom de Cendrars orne une bouée de sauvetage associant l'auctorité d'avant-garde au travail de sauvetage dans une décennie marquée par les catastrophes maritimes du Titanic au Lusitania"" The name of Cendrars adorns a life preserver associating avant-garde authority with rescue work in a decade marked by maritime disasters from the Titanic to the Lusitania Sophie Esch. Rare early autograph inscription signed and dated December 1918 on this text by Blaise Cendrars to Georges Le Cardonnel literary critic who co-wrote with Charles Vellay La Littérature contemporaine a survey conducted among French critics writers and poets.
