9449Emerson Ralph Waldo Carlyle Thomas. CRITICAL AND MISCELLANEOUS ESSAYS. Boston: James Munroe 1838-9. 4 vols. First edition first printings. Original blue-green cloth gilt. Minor wear and a few stray marks but a very attractive sharp set of this rare collection of Carlyle's works edited by Emerson. The edition was 1000 copies. The first two volumes were printed and published together in 1838 and last two volumes were published together in mid-1839. After the four volumes were issued Carlyle bought 260 sets for distribution in England with a cancel title page leaving 740 for the American market.
