Signature reads: With Compliments C Thorpe 9/20 1923. The cover is somewhat soiled and worn. Carlyle Thorpe celebrated 25 years of service as general manager of the California Walnut Growers Association CWGA on Jan 27 1937. "The California Walnut Growers Association was organized in 1911 by a number of representative individual walnut growers as a co-operative non-profit marketing organization without capital stock. Fifteen of the local walnut growers associations immediately contracted with the California Walnut Growers Association for the marketing of their output and subsequently other associations did likewise. The author writes that it is not his intention that this volume should be used as a text book or a statistical reference work. It is no more or less than the record of a journey in search of facts about walnuts and walnut production not ordinarily available to those interested in this subject. In 1921 the board of directors authorized Thorpe to visit the walnut -producing regions of Europe and Asia-quite an adventure in those days. In his privately published A Journey Through the Walnut Sections of Europe and Asia he described harvesting and often-unsanitary shelling methods but of greatest use to California growers were his observations on varieties and cultural practices. These helped influence the industry in the direction of harvesting and drying walnuts earlier rather than letting nature take its course. Up to this point growers sun-dried their harvested walnuts and mold was a continuing problem. University of California researchers in concert with the CWGA experimented with artificial drying to remove moisture from nuts before they were shipped to the packinghouse. By 1927 half the crop was artificially dried. Privately Printed hardcover
