Matted. Very good. A fine portrait of a contemplative Carlyle seated. deep in thought smoking his pipe by a fireplace by the Chicago commercial artist and book plate designer 1880 - 1972. The portrait is enclosed within a complex border of flowers thistle and vines with Carlyle's name entwined in the lower margin. This portrait is very much in the style of - but surpasses in composition - the portrait he did of William Morris which appeared as part of a series in THE INLAND PRINTER to which he was frequent contributor. Signed in the image and with Junge's name and address in pencil on the verso. unknown books

Correspondence of Carlyle and Emerson is the product of the lifelong friendship between Emerson and the Scottish philosopher and social commentator Thomas Carlyle. The two first met during Emerson's first travels in 1833. Sailing first to Europe Emerson met with John Stuart Mill who gave him a letter of introduction to Carlyle. It was during this trip that Emerson had his intellectual and spiritual revelations that led to his formation of transcendentalism. He formed a close bond with Carlyle and the two corresponded until Carlyle's death in 1881. First Edition First Printing large volume in half leather with marbled boards. The front board of Volume 1 is reattached with repairs to interior hinge in white fabric tape. Otherwise they are in very good condition with minor wear at spine and minor foxing. Limited to 250 copies this being number 12. unknown books

Minor wear and a few stray marks but a very attractive sharp set of this rare collection of Carlyle's works edited by Emerson. The edition was 1000 copies. The first two volumes were printed and published together in 1838 and last two volumes were published together in mid-1839. After the four volumes were issued Carlyle bought 260 sets for distribution in England with a cancel title page leaving 740 for the American market.
