Dark blue-green buckram lettered in gilt though the spine is faded. Corners square binding solid. Deckled edges some of which remain uncut. Jacket is leatherette paper with titles printed in black and a paste-down illustration. The jacket is rubbed lightly marked and has closed tears at the font hinge. Included with the Main book is a Second volume entitled "The Golden Cockerel Press The Canterbury Tales and Eric Gill: Decoration and the Mise en Page" by Peter Holliday. A useful addition to such a sumptuous volume. This is the same size as the 'Canterbury Tales; but very slim. This is Bound with a black cloth spine sage-green paper boards and a Title Label to the front board. "The Canterbury Tales" is bound in Black Nigerian goatskin leather by G. Lachenmaier with Fabriano Tiziano endpapers. Leather is blocked in 24-carat gold with gold titles/decoration to the spine and upper board. All edges gilt. With a black satin ribbon marker. Canterbury Tales = c.768 pages. Peter Holliday Essay = 48pp. Dimensions of the books are 12 ½" x 7 ¾" Outer Clamshell dimensions are Small Folio = 35cm by 23cm 13¾ by 9 inches. The Canterbury Tales is a collection of 24 stories that runs to over 17000 lines written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer. In 1386 Chaucer became Controller of Customs and Justice of peace and then three years later in 1389 Clerk of the King's work.
