It is understood to be an allegory of the contrasts between flesh and spirit of love in its physical and religious dimensions. Paul Claudel 1868 1955 was a French poet dramatist and diplomat. He was most famous for his verse dramas which often convey his devout Catholicism. Claudel was nominated six times for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Kathleen O'Flaherty was a Professor of French at University College Cork. She was a respected scholar whose writings on Voltaire and Chateaubriand were internationally acknowledged.
