Questo volume offre invece una prova efficace e articolata dell'autonomia del primo romanzo manzoniano, vagliandone la poetica dello sguardo che ne spiega la logica narrativa. Valter Puccetti mostra come nel Fermo e Lucia il tema della visione di personaggio - tra riflessi d'identità, transfert d'autore e proiezioni simboliche - svolga una tragica e paradossale epopea del male come cecità strutturante e come vuoto metafisico. Dall'accurata e articolata indagine emerge peraltro fino a quale punto, nel Fermo e Lucia, i sentieri del mito (ad esempio quello di Medusa) e quelli dell'antropologia e della teologia si incrocino e si sovrappongano, secondo una trama ambiziosa e talora vertiginosa che andrà parzialmente perduta nel passaggio ai Promessi Sposi.
