This is Doris Lessing's first short-story collection and her second book overall following her successful debut novel 'The Grass is Singing'. Here she offers a tightly-knit collection of stories reflecting the country in which she grew up South Africa with each tale handling different aspect of life in the veldt and the attitudes of the settlers during this period. Lessing was the eleventh woman and the oldest person ever to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. In the original cloth binding with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally lovely with only a hint of bumping to the spine and fading to its tail. Bookseller label to front paste down. Dust wrapper is smart with mild sunning to the spine and scattered spots to the wrap. Edge wear resulting in minor loss to the heads and tails of the spine and folds. Tape repair to head of front joint. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with scattered spots to the endpapers and the odd spot to the contents.
