Among the titles on offer are Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Jane Austen's Emma which is listed as "in press." Contemporary publisher's binding: dun paper boards brick linen back with paper label. Early and possibly contemporary ink ownership Geo. A. Botts and a mid-twentieth century bookseller's label Claitor's of Baton Rouge LA on front pastedown in each volume. Bindings show general rubbing and soiling are sunned on spines and the labels are abraded and nearly illegible. Volume 1 is missing the rear fly-leaf and a blank and one leaf p. 103/4 is torn but without loss. Text is quite clean but for a couple of foxed leaves in each volume. A very good and sound copy in contemporary bindings. Rare. unknown books

Contemporary reviewers suspicious of the numerous solecisms contained within the text eventually identified the young Disraeli who did not move in high society as the author. Disraeli continued the tale in a second volume also of 1826 and three subsequent volumes in 1827. The form in which Vivian Grey is published now is the revised 1853 edition which was severely expurgated and according to critic Wendy Burton lost much of the charm and freshness of the 1826 edition. The book is a frequent touchstone for discussions of Disraeli's political and literary career. Vivian Grey is often written about as a cornerstone work of the "fashionable" or "silver fork" school of fiction but it is also the first work in the genre of the political novel as later practiced by Trollope Meredith Eliot Wells and Mrs. Humphrey Ward. 1868002361London: Frederick Warne and Co. 1868. Benjamin Disraeli 1804-1881 had a long literary and political career culminating in serving as Prime Minister. This is a Very Good Plus copy of a Later Printing of the "Revised Edition" of 1853. His first novel it was first published anonymously in 1826. Later Disraeli added a sequel of several chapters and this is the established and expurgated text of today. Early editions of Disraeli's works are uncommon these days and this is an extremely interesting publication in itself. According to the "Advertisement" that serves as a preface and dated 1853 Disraeli was forced to reissue the novel because of the pirated editions particularly those in Germany and the United States. Bound in marbled paper boards with black leather spine and tips; six ruled bands in gilt on the spine with gilt lettering. Rubbing to the margins. The text is clean and bright very readable today; 416 pages. The front paste-down and free endpaper have numerous notes in ink regarding the characters. Size: 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall. First Thus. The first Uncle Tom in England appears to be an english novel which draws a parallel to Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. The author is not attributed although to the rear there is an essay by anti-slavery campaigner and president of the British and Foreign anti-slavery society Thomas Clarkson. To the preface is written that the author has connected its plot to the work of Mrs Stowe and is therefore to be looked on as an Echo or sequel to 'Uncle Tom'. Several characters share their names with Stowe's. This is the third edition of Uncle Tom in England printed the same year as the first American edition. Uncle tom in England is an extremely scarce and unusual text. The second novel to this text is Benjamin Disraeli's novel Venetia. Venetia was originally released in 1837 and was published so as to form an income for Disraeli in a time of need. It is a romance based on the characters of Shelley and Byron. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally generally smart with heavy rubbing to spine and boards. Spine label and head and tail of spine are particularly rubbed. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's inscription to front pastedown 'John P Maitland Family Heriloom'. Another inscription to recto of front endpaper dated 1918. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with scattered spots throughout. Good Houlston and Stoneman hardcover

Disraeli turned towards literature after his financial disaster motivated in part by a desperate need for money and brought out his first novel Vivian Grey in 1826. The Young Duke was his second novel first published in 1831. Disraeli's writing is generally interesting and his books teem with striking thoughts shrewd maxims and brilliant phrases which stick in the memory; on the other hand he is often artificial extravagant and turgid. Critic William Kuhn argued that much of his fiction can be read as "the memoirs he never wrote" revealing the inner life of a politician for whom the norms of Victorian public life appeared to represent a social straitjacket particularly with regard to his allegedly "ambiguous sexuality." James Grant 18221887 was a Scottish author. Grant was born in Edinburgh Scotland and was a distant relation of Sir Walter Scott. He was a prolific author. Many of his 56 novels are about important characters and events in Scottish history. In 1853 he founded the National Association for the Vindication of Scottish Rights. In a half crushed morocco binding. Externally sound though somewhat rubbed. The hinges are strained but holding firm. Internally firmly bound bright and clean throughout.
