Christian Caillard was a French artist who illustrated this copy of Belles Saisons with delicacy and style. Unbound pages in a paper folder and slipcase. Externally smart. Zij wordt net als eerder Voltaire of Victor Hugo beschouwd als een van de grootste Franse schrijvers en als een symbool van haar tijd en van de Franse literatuur. Ze behoort zowel in Frankrijk als internationaal tot de beroemdste romanschrijfsters van de Franse literatuur. Haar openlijk erkende en uitgesproken biseksualiteit neemt een belangrijke plaats in haar leven en werk in evenals haar diepe liefde voor de natuur en haar teder spottende beschrijving van de Franse samenleving van de Belle Époque. In 1945 werd zij de tweede vrouw die verkozen werd tot lid van de Académie Goncourt; van 1949 tot 1954 was zij er voorzitter van. Zij was bovendien de eerste vrouw in Frankrijk die een nationale begrafenis kreeg.<p data-start=""1160"" data-end=""1348"">Nadat de roman van 21 mei tot 1 oktober 1910 als feuilleton verscheen in <em data-start=""1233"" data-end=""1252"">La Vie parisienne</em> werd <em data-start=""1259"" data-end=""1273"">La Vagabonde</em> midden november van datzelfde jaar in boekvorm uitgegeven door Ollendorff.</p><p data-start=""1350"" data-end=""1779"">De roman werd geschreven en gepubliceerd in een periode van hevig conflict tussen Colette en haar echtgenoot van wie de echtscheiding op 21 juni 1910 werd uitgesproken. Tussen beiden groeiden bitterheid wrok en wederzijdse vernederingen. Het onsympathieke personage Adolphe Taillandy kan daarom worden gezien als een scherpe karikatuur van Willy waardoor <em data-start=""1708"" data-end=""1722"">La Vagabonde</em> gedeeltelijk gelezen kan worden als een roman van wraak.</p> hardcover
