First edition of this spectacular presentation souvenir album for the Century of Progress which influenced modernist architects for decades and served as an invaluable exhibit of art deco design motifs. The limited number of presentation albums appear to have been created as gifts by the photographers for the Board of Trustees Officers and Founder Members for the Exposition. These remarkable images include a night shot of the Grand Fountain; aerial views of the grounds; the facade of the Hall of Science which typified the linear geometric Art Deco style of the Fair designed by architect Paul Philippe Cret and one of the interior shots showing the Great Hall announcing Planck’s Quantum and Einstein’s Relativity theories; the General Electric buildings; the stunning Transportation Building with it’s amazing Art Deco facade and a nighttime view of the Planetarium and Terrazzo Reflecting Pools. The photographers have also included an excellent photo of Italo Balbo’s squadron of 24 Savoia-Marchetti SM.55X flying boats above Lake Michigan next to the fairgrounds. His planes had left Italy on June 30 1933 and finally arrived over Chicago on July 15 1933 and even carrying airmail of which the commemorative envelopes are still very desired items by collectors. Also included are views of the Streets of Shanghai Swift’s Orchestra Shell Admiral Byrd’s South Pole Ship the “City of New York†The Chrysler Motors Building Swiss Village Electrical building with fireworks in a night scene and many others. Kaufmann & Fabry was an active commercial photographic firm specializing in architectural photography in Chicago from before 1910 and are still an active company. Founders were Charles D. Kaufmann b. 1888 an Austrian-American and Herman Fabry 1879-1955 German-American who are perhaps best remembered as the official photographers of the 1933 Century of Progress World’s Fair and were awarded not only the rights for publishing and distributing photographs and photos in publications but also operated a camera shop and film processing lab on the Exhibition grounds through 1933 and 1934. It derives its legitimacy from the Declaration of Independence and announces the "Absolute equality of innate human rights." The founders determine to organize "themselves into a band of brothers pledged unto one another to be faithful unto death declaring 'in Union there is strength'." Despite the suggestions of an early industrial trade union in what would become the Nation's industrial heartland the Union purports to elevate the whole person-- encouraging the pursuit of knowledge reining in government encroachments and spending and insisting that government is the servant of the people. Peter Kaufmann who appears to have been the prime mover of the organization was a Canton author almanac-maker bookseller publisher and clearly of an entrepreneurial bent.
OCLC 17342629 6. 'This three-volume encyclopedia provides a wealth of primary source material on the American theater sic organ an instrument designed for the movie theaters of the silent film era that has now all but disappeared from American pop culture. The first two volumes contain articles about organ manufacturing companies. The third volume is devoted to "the mighty Wurlitzer". Each entry is documented with primary source material such as photos company records stop lists advertisements drawings and interviews and correspondence with organ makers. In addition Junchen has provided an opus list detailing the histories of all of the organs built by each company. These materials will prove indispensable to anyone researching popular music in the silent-film era' Trove presumably quoting the publisher.
The first two volumes are by David Junchen 1946 - 30 January 1992. The third volume by Preston Kaufmann is the first of a proposed five-volume series chronicling 'the rise and fall of the Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ plus the company and people behind the product'. Loosely inserted is the four-page prospectus for that set and a circular letter dated 15 December 1995 from the author apologising for the delay in publication of this volume and outlining some of the problems encountered since he 'fell heir to the "Encyclopedia" project four years ago'. Reading between the lines we thought we could discern why no further volumes have been produced. A quick search online unearthed the less happy truth of the matter: Preston Kaufmann died in 1998 at the age of 42. 3 items. Showcase Publications hardcover
