Quest'opera è considerata come la prima monografia bibliografica sugli scacchi. Minimi segni del tempo ed un piccolo restauro alla base della brossura editoriale, altrimenti ottimo esemplare marginoso e non rifilato. Opera famosa ed ampiamente diffusa grazie a ristampe successive, rarissima in questa prima edizione a tiratura limitata.</p>

"[Jacob Grimm] created, almost out of nothing, the scientific study of German and Germanic mythology, philology, poetry and law, mostly in the years 1806-29 when [he] was a badly paid library-assistant in Cassel. His 'German Grammar' is in fact a 'Germanic Grammar', tracing the development of this branch of the Indo-European language family [... Grimm] explained the differences of the Germanic languages from their sister tongues and within themselves by showing the determinable regularity of hitherto unnoticed or inexplicable phenomena such as the gradation and modification of vowels" (PMM). - This set does not include the volumes 3 and 4, which were not published until 1837. Front inner hinge of vol. 2 reinforced at rebinding. Stored in a magnificent giltstamped green half calf portofolio by Jacques P. Desmonts of Norwalk, Connecticut. Legatura strettamente coeva in piena pergamena semirigida. Qualche segno d'uso esterno ed usuali bruniture sparse, peraltro complessivamente esemplare genuino ed in buono stato di conservazione. Edizione originale di questo vastissimo repertorio bibliografico che raccoglie migliaia di titoli appartenenti ad ogni ramo dello scibile umano.

Copia fresca e marginosa, qualche sporadica brunitura limitatamente a pochi fascicoli. Ex libris Tadini alla prima carta bianca di tutti i volumi. Edizione originale, opera importante.

Due parti legate in 8° (cm. 17,4 x 23,5), legatura piena pergamena coeva, pp iv, IV, 188 per il primo tomo; IV, 189-380 per il secondo. Esemplare in buone condizioni, curiose annotazioni manoscritte in italiano nel margine bianco di alcune carta di Francesco Testa, 1823. La "Frusta" fu in un primo momento sospesa al 15 settembre 1764 dall'A., essendo spirato il "primo anno frustatorio". Il 15 gennaio 1765 l'A. riprese le pubblicazioni che furono definitivamente chiuse, tra numerose polemiche, il 15 luglio 1765. Il Baretti aveva vissuto a lungo in Inghilterra e si era ispirato per la sua rivista proprio al giornalismo inglese. In tono acceso e con spirito polemico, utilizzando un vocabolario sempre ricco e fantasioso, si oppone ai cattivi libri a cui attribuisce la decadenza morale dellItalia. La Frusta è contro il «Flagello dei cattivi Libri, che si vanno da molti anni quotidianamente stampando in tutte le Parti della nostra Italia, e il mal gusto di cui lempiono, e il perfido costume che in esse propagano»; è il primo esempio di critica letteraria in Italia. Tre esemplari del primo tomo, e due del secondo, in SBN.

De retour à Paris il fréquenta les salons et se lia avec les Encyclopédistes, Diderot, d'Alembert et Rousseau avec lequel il devint ami, partageant avec ce dernier la même passion pour la musique. AN IMPORTANT EXAMPLE OF AMERICAN COLOR PRINTING. Two volumes, complete. A remarkable catalogue of a remarkable collection. Odell focused on bibliography, books about books, history of printing and the graphic arts, and fine printing, at a time when few American collectors were interested in these areas. Books in these categories account for well over half of the 2,434 lots. There is also a wide selection of extremely rare books in other areas, especially the occult, including incunables and a few highly important medieval manuscripts. The catalogue itself is notable for two reasons. First, there are the precise, knowledgeable, and extensive descriptions, with numerous references to specialized bibliographies: most American book catalogues of this period give the barest information about the items at hand. Second, this is certainly the most lavishly-produced American book auction catalogue of the 19th century. It was beautifully printed on fine laid paper, with numerous engraved initials, headpieces, and tailpieces. VOLUME I OF THE PRESENT SET IS FROM THE DELUXE ISSUE, ONE OF VERY FEW COPIES PRINTED PRIMARILY FOR PRIVATE CIRCULATION, with the initials, headpieces, and tailpieces printed in different colors. The sets of this deluxe issue that reached the market were sold for $10 each, a colossal price when we consider that lot 1462, a copy of Bodoni's 1818 Manuale Tipografico, sold for $4.50! Volume II is from the regular issue, and is NEATLY PRICED THROUGHOUT in a contemporary hand. Title-pages printed in red and black. Facsimiles. 4to. Volume I is ABSOLUTELY PRISTINE, uncut, unopened, unsewn, unstabbed, and unglued, loosely laid into original wraps (light soiling to wraps). Volume II in bound in half leather and marbled boards, with original wraps bound in (binding somewhat worn at extremities). Both volumes internally FINE, AND BRIGHT. Complete sets are extremely rare (volume II is especially scarce). Not in Bigmore & Wyman or Taylor.
