5 Vols., 4to (268 x 180 mm), limited to 130, frontis., portrait, a very good ex-library set, later red quarter calf, cloth boards. Huth's collection, which ranked among the finest in England, was rich in incunabula, voyages, Shakespearean and early English literature, and Bibles. He began compiling this catalogue late in life, but finding it too time-consuming, he employed W.C. Hazlitt and F. S. Ellis to do most of the work. "With the assistance of Ellis and Hazlitt, Huth had started printing a magnificent catalogue of his library, with full titles of every item and exact collations, both entirely novel features in a library catalogue. The work was completed in five volumes two years after his death and has remained... a corner-stone of British bibliography." De Ricci, p. 151.

He supplied 'Literary societies, mechanics societies, book clubs, village libraries, schools... on the most liberal terms' according to an advertisement of 1839. He was active in Newcastle politics, his shop being the headquarters of the Whigs on the town council. Succeeded by his son, Emerson II. First edition. Jacques-Georges Chauffepié (9 November 1702, Leeuwarden - 5 July 1786, Amsterdam) was an 18th-century French biographer and calvinist minister and preacher. He added some 1400 articles to Bayle's dictionary. He spend many years preparing the work and showed an enormous learning. It was, together with Bayle's dictionary, one of the earlier dictionaries in Europe published in vernacular to make an impact on the European world of letters."The project of a supplement to the dictionary of Bayle was conceived at the death of the philosopher, but was not executed. After some English people of letters gave an English translation of the book by Bayle in 40 vol, with considerable additions, it was proposed to Chauffepié to translate into French the additions made in England. These additions consisted either in addition to articles by Bayle, either new articles, He devoted many years to this work, and made himself new additions and new articles. Out of nearly fourteen hundred items found in his dictionary, more than six hundred, almost all English, are translated without additions from Chauffepié; about two hundred and eighty are reworked by him, some five hundred items are entirely his. Chauffepié has neither the piquancy nor cynicism of Bayle. He meets the character of Minister which he was invested with. He sometimes straightens English authors, and shows great erudition. Only in a work of this scope can we afford the explanatory notes of the text, or dissertations on some curious history or literature points" (Wikipedia).

Shulman spent twenty-five years researching this work and wrote it with librarians, students of cryptography, and book collectors in mind. An introduction preceeds the following six sections: works relating directly to ciphers from 1518 to 1976, chronological list of works relating indirectly to cryptography, chronological list of manuscripts, alphabetical index of authors and translators, chronological list of patents on cryptographic devices from 1874 through 1953, sample list of books on cryptography written in languages other than English. Folio, x,507,[1]pp., facsimiles throughout (some coloured), orig. cloth. The present volume is compiled by Lotte Hellinga with contributions by Paul Needham, Margaret Nickson and John Goldfinch. It includes descriptions of 323 copies of books, representing 221 editions of items printed in England, out of a total of 395 known to date, extensive introductions and 52 full-size plates accompanying the descriptions of printing types. Since the appearance in 1908 of the first volume of BMC the work has been relied on as one of the main authorities on the earliest printing in Europe. Its coverage of early printing from the European countries in which the new technique was successively introduced provides not only extensive bibliographical descriptions, but introduces the material with an analysis of the development of printing in the relevant areas. The guiding theme throughout the earlier volumes is the spread of printing in the fifteenth century as reflected in the British Museum Library's outstanding collection. England is the last volume to appear in this momentous series.
Folio, 288pp., 50 leaves of facsimiles and other illustrs., orig. cloth. New. Among the Hebrew books in the British Library, incunable editions have prominent place. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Chipped on margins. Some owner notes. Otherwise a good copy. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 18 cm). In Ottoman script. 32 p. This rare book includes the royal travel of Sultan Abdülmecid in 1262 AH [1846 AD] to Roumelia. From Edirne, Abdülmecid proceeded to Eski Zagra (Stara Zagora), Kizanlik (Kazanluk), Gabrova (Gabrovo), Tirnova (Turnovo), Rusçuk (Ruse), Silistre (Silistra), and Varna. The route of the 1846 tour followed closely, except in reverse order, Mahmud II's tour of 1837. According to witness accounts, along the way, the sultan was greeted everywhere with poetic recitations and songs of praise and prayer, both in Ottoman and Bulgarian. The pride of place among welcoming parties invariably fell on students, of all creeds, most clad in white uniforms, some in solemn church-going attire, with flowers and green branches in their hands. At every stop, ceremonial cannon salvos were fired during the day and elaborate firework illuminations were performed at night. In the town of Kizanlik, known then as now for the most fragrant roses and the best rose oil, the sultan's visit coincided, possibly by design, with the rose harvesting season. So the locals sprinkled rose water and poured rose oil before the sultan's cavalcade. According to Hristo Stambolski, in the three days of the sultan's stay in town, no rose harvesting was done so that the whole area would be exquisitely scented in his honor. For his part, the sultan had doctors vaccinate all children against smallpox in public before sending each one off with a small gift of money. Even people with rare diseases were, on occasion, summoned to the sultan's presence so his doctors could cure them. The sublime visit caused the locals, who were unaccustomed to direct contact with the center of power, quite a stir. The most detailed account, albeit from a hostile source, relates the sultan's visit to Rusçuk, which, at four days, may have also been the longest. According to Nayden Gerov, the greeting ceremonies proceeded on a communal basis, with the Jews being placed closest to the town walls, next to them the Armenians, then the Bulgarians, and finally, the Muslims, situated the farthest from town, yet being the first to see and welcome the sultan. As the sultan approached, each group of youngsters would in turn sing for him, everyone else bowing profusely. Based on Gerov's description, it seems that Abdülmecid was dressed in a slightly more luxurious fashion than during state ceremonies in Istanbul. ((Source: Sultan Abdülmecid's Tour of Rumelia and the Trope of Love by Stephanov). The sultan began to travel by the way of the gate of Yedikule in Istanbul in May 6, 1846. He followed the way of Ayastefanos, Silivri, Çorlu, Burgaz, Edirne, Zagra-i Atik, Kizanli, Trnova, Rusçuk, Silistre, Rusçuk, Shumnu, and Varna and came back to Istanbul by way of the sea on June 14, 1846. During this travel, the Sultan listened to people's problems and ordered the authorities to be solved with those problems. He received successful military and administrative authorities in settlements on the way of travel and rewarded them. He also received the governors of Serbia, Eflak and Bogdan, and the representatives of foreign states. With this travel, the Sultan aimed to strengthen the connection to the center of people and administrators in provinces. Özege 17910. First Edition.
[iv],213,[1]pp., tipped-in engraved portrait of Gossett published July 6, 1813 by R. S. Kirby (partially effected by a circular water-stain), title-page a little dusty, ruled in red throughout with prices in a cont. hand, cont. half calf, worn, re-backed with remains of orig. spine laid-down, label chipped. Rev. Isaac Gossett (1735-1812) was "the most regular attendant at book sales of his generation, who bought more bibliographical treasures for 6d. than any man before or since" according to Frank Herrman's 'Sotheby's'. "For over thirty years a familiar figure in the London auction rooms where he... gave a running commentary, critical and bibliographical, on the lots as they were offered" ? Munby. Gossett helped Dibdin with his 'Introduction to the Classics' and was cast as "Lepidus" in his 'Bibliomania'. A tiny man with a liking for old fashioned hats he appeared in several contemporary caricatures and was the subject of an amusing obituary poem in the 'Gentleman's Magazine, for 1813. He also played a formative role in the young Richard Heber's career as a book collector. Munby, Some Caricatures of Book-Collectors, 1948.
