Si tratta di una copia manoscritta da Giuseppe Massobrio nell'agosto del 1865 (come da dichiarazione in fine) del testo impresso in originale a Bergamo dal Locatelli nel 1786.
Quattro parti in un volume di cm. 23, pp. (10) 682, lxxxiii (1). Solida ed elegante legatura di poco posteriore in piena pelle, dorso a piccoli nervi con filetti e titoli in oro su tassello. Armi (non identificate) impresse in oro al centro dei piatti. Tagli spruzzati. Piccola reintegrazione dei pelle alla cuffia superiore. Bell'esemplare, fresco, marginoso ed in eccellente stato di conservazione.

Qualche moderato segno d'uso esterno, fioriture marginali ad alcune carte, peraltro esemplare ben conservato, marginoso e stampato su carta forte. Opera piuttosto rara e nel presente esemplare completa delle 100 tavole di cui ben 13 di queste possiedono un duplicato dell'immagine stampato in argento. Quest'ultima caratteristica lo rende una copia piuttosto speciale e non paragonabile agli altri esemplari censiti. La storia bibliografica di quest'opera è piuttosto complessa: apparentemente nel 1828 apparve un altro volume che si può considarere la prosecuzione del presente, ma per certe bibliografie i due posseggono valenza autonoma.

Partly rather (but evenly) browned, waterstain through upper margins, locally extending into text but mostly less visible, good otherwise. - Jean François Séguier (1703-1784) was a French botanist, historian, bibliographer and archeologist who had, i.a., studied botany with Antoine de Jussieu at Paris, and traveled extensively in Europe. The present work is the very rare first edition (a reissue was made by Haak in Leiden in 1760) of one of the earliest and best comprehensive botanical bibliographies. "The coverage of the book is excellent, due to the fact that Séguier saw an unusual number of libraries on his European tour. He furthermore consulted as many catalogues of private libraries as possible. With the major Paris and London libraries accounted for, with the information obtained from Gronovius in Holland, and with his careful scanning of the liter-ature, Séguier achieved a very high degree of coverage." (Stafleu & Cowan). - The affixed bibliography by Bumaldus (pseudonym and anagram of Ovidius Montalbanus (1601-1671), professor at Bologna) is a reissue of the original edition of 1657. "Bumaldus' Bibliotheca botanica was undoubtedly a significant bibliographical effort from which his most important followers, Séguier and Haller, derived much bene-fits." Its bibliographical list concerns books dealing with grasses, with indication of the described or depicted species, and thus it is, probably, the the first published agrostological bibliography. Both works are descibed and discussed at length in Stafleu & Cowan's 'Taxonomic literature', under nr. 11.624 (vol. 5, pp. 485-488).

Atabey's remarkable collection of books, manuscripts and maps prior to 1854 relating to the Ottoman Empire and the Middle East, with each work carefully described and annotated. The catalogue is an important addition to the reference literature, supplementing Navari's Greece and the Levant: the Catalogue of the Henry Myron Blackmer Collection (London: 1989), and is particularly interesting for the number of works from celebrated libraries - including those of Britwell Court, the duc de La Rochefoucauld at Roche-Guyon, the Duke of Portland, the Duke of Marlborough, the Earls Fitzwilliam, Charles X of France, and Czar Nicholas I of Russia; a number of these are in armorial bindings, which are illustrated and referenced in a separate index of provenances, making the work a most useful resource.

Tout le monde romaniste était cependant bien conscient des limites de cette traduction datée, mais sans jamais envisager de la reprendre entièrement, tant la difficulté et l’ampleur de la tâche étaient considérables. On doit à Dominique Gaurier, historien du droit, romaniste, d’avoir eu le courage de s’atteler à une traduction de l’ensemble des cinquante livres du Digeste, cette forme d’encyclopédie de la littérature juridique classique du droit romain composée à la demande de l’empereur Justinien au VIe siècle, par laquelle il entendait restaurer la tradition juridique latine, et de nous présenter dans cet ouvrage ce qui constitue sans doute une des entreprises les plus ambitieuses de l’édition juridique contemporaine. Cette traduction repose sur plusieurs postulats. D’abord la prise en compte des bouleversements qui ont été accomplis dans la compréhension et l’approche du droit romain, que l’on expose plus aujourd’hui comme un droit théorique, mais au contraire totalement casuistique. Ainsi la traduction proposée entend permettre tant aux historiens qu’aux juristes d’aborder ce texte avec un regard nouveau en revenant à la compréhension du droit qu’avaient partagée les jurisconsultes de l’époque classique. Ensuite, elle souhaite présenter une approche rigoureuse, en traduisant systématiquement toutes les expressions idiomatiques du droit romain pour en faciliter la compréhension mais aussi, en suivant au plus près le déroulement de la pensée telle qu’exposée par les jurisconsultes romains, sans la ramener à une expression qui serait celle de notre Code civil ou de notre doctrine juridique moderne. Enfin, les lecteurs de cette traduction faite par un seul auteur, comme l’avait été celle de Hulot en 1803, y trouveront une cohérence maintenue d’un bout à l’autre de l’ouvrage. Les lecteurs, juristes et historiens, pourront ainsi avoir un accès renouvelé à cette source indispensable et qui méritait d’être rendue de nouveau accessible en bénéficiant des avancées de la science et de la lexicologie romaniste des deux derniers siècles.
