This is the first and only volume of the Bibliografishe yorbikher (Bibliographic Yearbooks) , published by the Bibliographic Commission, one of several subdivisions of the Philological Section of the YIVO. This department was charged with recording, and if possible collecting, all new publications in Yiddish and related material written in other languages. In 1927, the renamed Bibliographic Center became an independent unit of the institute, devoted to current books and journals. 1, 000 copies were published (title page verso) . Zunz (1794-1886) , born and educated in Germany, was a well-known historian. An heir to European Enlightenment, he was a founded of the idea of the "Science of Judaism. " In that vein, he fruitlessly hoped that Jewish studies would be taught in universities as a regular academic discipline, and that he'd be able to do the teaching. He believed that Jewish literature and learning was part of the broader scope of human affairs, including the sciences, and should not be shut up merely in discussions of religious matters. For his seventieth birthday, a foundation was set up to fund Zunz's and other similar scholarship. He continued to work until 1874, when his wife's death left him seriously depressed. Humphrey Chetham (1580-1653), wealthy Manchester textile merchant, under the terms of his will, the bulk of Chetham's fortune was to be used to establish a hospital for the maintenance and education of forty poor boys, and the first free public library in the world. Myers Ltd. made out to Miss Jean Preston (formerly of the Department of Manuscripts at Henry E. Huntington Library), 187 full-page photogravure plates, orig. buckram, a fine set. A most important catalogue. 118 of the 183 manuscripts described in these volumes were acquired from two outstanding collections, those of Earl Spencer, with the Althorp Library in 1892, and from the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres collection, formerly at Haigh Hall, in 1901. The papers printed in these two volumes extend from 1756 to the death of Lady Hamilton in 1815. The earliest papers form the correspondence of Sir William Hamilton, and are almost exclusively of the period after his appointment as Ambassador to the Court of Naples; they include letters to and from some of the best known men of the time, and are full of details of the most interesting social and political events of the day. The second volume covers the years 1798 to 1815. The real interest of the series begins with the victory of the Nile and closes with Trafalgar; and the central object of that interest is the figure of Nelson. A highly important reference work, privately printed in a small number.
