89756WOODBLOCK PRINTING A COLLECTION OF OFUDA CHARMS IN THREE ALBUMS. Slightly over 1200 ofuda ranging in size from that of a grain of rice there are 97 of these up to 21.5 x 31 cm. However the majority are approximately 15 x 5.5. cm or thereabouts with most having similar vertical proportions. All but three are laid down in the three albums. Two of the albums are matching double-sided accordion-fold albums with brown paper boards 23 x 16 cm each with a calligraphed title slip. 116 and 118 pages respectively including pastedowns. One of them opens with a large sheet of text 31.5 x 18 cm laid down. These albums are made from printed books that have been repurposed: the printed texts two long sheets each printed on one side only and bound parallel to each other back-to-back between the boards were detached and flipped over leaving the blank side of each exposed and then reattached to the boards. There is some ghosting of the printed text in areas that are not covered by ofuda and a few blank pages. The third album 100 pp. including pastedowns has worn cloth-covered boards 27 x 20.5 cm and an abraded title slip. It opens with two manuscript pages and there are a couple of notes within the album. Otherwise it is full of charms pasted down on every page. The album pages are foxed but not the charms. For further interesting information on ofuda charms and other popular printed genre I recommend Rebecca Salter's excellent book: https://www./Japanese-Popular-Prints-Votive-Playin g/dp/0824830830 A wonderful older collection of an ephermeral genre which is by no means easy to find either in collection or singly. unknown books

196380429Dublin Republic of Ireland: Wood Printing Works Ltd 1963. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Good/Fair. 32 pages. Foreword by Sean F. Lemass. Small chips missing to dust jacket edges. Some text in Gaelic. This bookwith over twenty full color reproductions is a complete historical record of John F. Kennedy's visit to Ireland. All the highlights of his visit the happy and intimate as well as the formal and impressive are fully described with a wealth of background information also included. All his speeches are recorded in full as are many of the witty asides with which he delighted all who heard him. In short this book recaptures the atmosphere of those four short summer days when the whole Irish people poured forth their hearts in waves of love and respect in what was tragically to prove their opportunity of seeing this great man. As Sean Lemass says in his foreword this book "will be cherished as a memento by Irish people at home and abroad." The Emerald Isle welcomed Kennedy America's first Irish Catholic President like a returning son. Thousands lined the streets to welcome the young leader as his motorcade cruised its way through the streets of Dublin. In typically whimsical fashion Kennedy began his introductory speech by saying: "It took 115 years to make this trip and six thousand miles and three generations." He was of course referring to his Irish roots where the President's great grandfather had fled The Great Famine sailing from New Ross Co. Wexford just a few miles from the Kennedy family home to America's east coast. During his visit Kennedy traveling without a heavily pregnant Jackie met with Irish President Eamon de Valera as well his wife Sinead who recited a poem about emigration and exile that would ultimately stay with Kennedy for a long time. The poem read: "'Tis the Shannon's brightly glancing stream brightly gleaming silent in the morning beam. Oh! The sight entrancing. Thus return from travels long years of exile years of pain to see Old Shannon's face again o'er the waters glancing." So impressed was JFK that he incorporated the words in his final speech before departing from Shannon. "Well I am going to come back and see old Shannon's face again and I am taking as I go back to America all of you with me" he said. Before he left though he dropped in on his Irish cousin Mary Ryan who held a garden-party for him in the grounds of their ancestral home. In typical Irish mammy fashion Mrs. Ryan gave her famous relative a warm welcome but couldn't be doing with all the Secret Service protocol and Presidential red-tape. She walked right up to Kennedy to give him a kiss hello - which is usually a big no-no after JFK cut a ceremonial cake she demanded that he give her the first slice and when the President informed his cousin that he had to leave she responded by saying: "Oh you're not going yet." Sadly he would never return nor see old Shannon's face again as months later he was assassinated in Dallas. But the impact of his visit still resonates with Irish people. Kennedy helped to publicize and legitimize the strong link between America and Ireland which still exists to this day. Wood Printing Works, Ltd hardcover
