Original blue paper wrapper. lower margin of a few pages cut a bit short.</p><p>This chapbook contains an alphabetical list of dreams and their interpretations. It is an adaptation of Vulson de la Colombière's treatise that was first published in 1660. The text is unchanged from the original but there is less. The present chapbook contains 12 pages and the original had nearly 100 pages. The last lines of the work contain the 27 most commonly pulled numbers of the lottery. Is there a connection with the dreams and the lottery They are often associated but the dreams descriptions of not have a number in this chapbook. c.f. R. In 19th century half speckled calf with corners and marbled papers over boards. Joints are moderately rubbed but sound; light shelfwear; a very few instances of early ink corrections or brief annotations in addition to Bowyer's name being added in ink to the title page in an early hand; additionally a 20th word in green ink on p. 1; one leaf M4 has been excised likely at the time of printing as the text is complete and the pagination is correct matching catalogued and digitized copies. <br /> <br /> In content this work comprises an abridged reprinting of Conyer Middleton's Dissertation 1734-5 correctly arguing that contrary to popular opinion William Caxton was the first printer in England. The second essay is an English translation of Gerard Meerman's Origines Typographicase in which the Dutch collector argues that the first printing was done by Laurentius in Harleim improved upon by Gutenberg and then Schoeffer in Mainz. Both essays are accompanied by intelligent commentary by the printers in addition to appendices on early Greek Hebrew and polyglot books. Bigmore and Wyman state "The book although it has been robbed of its authority by modern researchers at the time of its publication brought in great praise to its compilers the 'learned printers' of the age" p. 75. An important book delving into the history of printing in Europe that was reprinted several times in the 18th century. This copy of the first edition is from the library of American collector Albert A. Howard with his small monograph plate on the rear pastedown. Full contemporary blue-black morocco faded to emerald spine gilt extra narrow gilt borders on boards marbled endsheets a.e.g. Fore-corners bumped joints a bit worn but not cracked lower fore- corners of several leaves exhibit an old ink stain with old mends to two corners but otherwise an attractive copy. The Baskerville Bible one of the highpoints of the imprint and indeed of all English Bible-making was printed in an edition of 1250 copies priced at four guineas. This copy of what Dibdin declared "one of the most beautifully printed books in the world" has the subscribers list in the third state concluding with the entry for Charles York. Such an ambitious undertaking stretched Baskerville's finances to their limits and of necessity in 1768 he remaindered 556 copies to the London bookseller R. Baldwin at 36s each. As late as 1771 Baldwin was advertising copies in sheets in the BIRMINGHAM GAZETTE priced at 3 guineas. "The design is traditional but the quality of material and workmanship is so high and the conventions are so delicately modified and consistently applied that the result is extremely impressive" - CAMBRIDGE HISTORY OF THE BIBLE p.464. This is a very interesting association copy having been the family Bible in the 18th and 19th centuries of the S.L. Galton family and descendants with extensive records in manuscript on two preliminary blanks recording such events as the marriage of Frances Ann Violetta Darwin daughter of Erasmus Darwin and aunt of Charles Darwin to Samuel Tertius Galton and the birth in 1822 of Francis Galton -- the originator of the 'school' of Eugenics explorer meteorologist psychologist and a central figure in the development of the use of fingerprints as a means of identification. With marginal notes and references. To which are added an index and an alphabetical table of the names in the Old and New Testaments with their significations. American Antiquarian Society "Isaiah Thomas’s Printing Press: "Old Number One". Darlow and Moule 1353. Isaiah Thomas' printing press first operated out of Boston: producing a newspaper and materials that encouraged American colonists to rebel against the British imperial government. Thomas moved his press to Worcester at the behest of his friends who suspected that it would be impounded by the British authorities. Thomas' Bible was produced in several quarto octavo and duodecimo editions. Darlow and Moule note that Thomas enlisted the help of clergymen and others to compare nearly thirty different editions of the scripture. The Thomas Bible is one of the more attractive productions of early American printing. The clasps largely perished quite a bit of rubbing to the leather's edges. Lacks leaves K3 and K4 the final verses of Maccabees also lacks the endpapers. An armorial bookplate that states "Williams" on the front pastedown an inscription reading Thomas Williams Jr. 1792 on the verso of the Apocrypha title page. Isaiah Thomas hardcover

A fine copy. 12mo contemporary polished continental calf marbled paper endpapers blind-ruled borders red morocco spine label gilt decorations and lettering a.e. stained red. Woodcut tailpieces. By the late 17th century the French government attempted to regulate all aspects of printing and the distribution of books in and around Paris. In 1686 those regulations were codified in the Édit du Roy pour le Règlement des Imprimeurs et Libraires de Paris and the Édit du Roy pour le Règlement des Relieurs et doreurs de Livres. Further revisions were made 30 years later and after some disagreements two editions of the code were published in 1723 and 1731 in the form of a decree. The code was extended to all of France in 1744 and remained in effect until 1777. This edition is a provincially printed version of the 1723 edition printed in Châlons-sur-Marne in 1735. The code is divided into 123 articles and is remarkably comprehensive in its regulation of all aspects of the trade including the import of books old and new bound and unbound and of imported printing types; books sold by subscription; requirements for the apprenticeships to booksellers and printers; the widows of booksellers and of printers; proofreaders; type founders; traveling booksellers; fairground booksellers and printers; prohibited books; auctions and inventories of libraries and bookstores et al. From the library of 19th century Châlons librarian and local historian Amédée Lhote with his bookplate on the front paste-down and ink ownership stamp in the margin of the final page of text; a bookseller's catalogue entry for the Histoire de l'imprimerie a Châlons 1895 on the rear paste-down. Two volumes. <br/> VERY ATTRACTIVE CONTEMPORARY MARBLED CALF GILT IN A NEOCLASSICAL DESIGN covers with a cresting palmette frame featuring ornate urn ornaments at corners flat spine divided into compartments by Greek key roll floral spray centerpieces one green and one black label marbled endpapers. With 55 PLATES OF COSTUMES designed by Philippe Chéry and engraved by Pierre-Michel Alix 50 of these PRINTED IN COLOR five in black and white a couple of these with color highlights applied by hand and with a color portrait of the author from the 1802 edition tipped in at front. Colas 717; Hiler p. 542; Lipperheide 3203; Cohen-de Ricci 227; Brunet IV 1135. One corner worn to board joints and extremities lightly rubbed but the bindings lustrous and generally very attractive. First volume slightly browned throughout second volume occasionally so volume II with two-inch marginal stain to upper gutter affecting four quires and six plates but not touching text or images two plates with pen marks in margins touching lettering but not image other trivial defects but still an excellent copy internally the colors especially clear and pleasing.<br/> <br/> This is an elegant production with the Neoclassical binding being the perfect complement to the color engravings of ancient Greek and Roman costumes that illustrate the present history of theatrical attire. In the two volumes here theater critic and historian Jean Charles Le Vacher de Charnois 1749-92 covers Classical tragedies and comedies as well as later interpretations of these dramas by playwrights including Racine. Le Vacher de Charnois intended a series of books encompassing as the title indicates theatrical costumes from all nations and from the ancient to the modern; however the French Revolution interrupted his scheme and as a monarchist he was imprisoned in 1792 for his writings in support of the aristocracy. It was long thought that he had died in the massacres at the Abbaye prison in September of that year but later research indicates that he may have been executed during the Reign of Terror in 1794. The artists who illustrated this work were at the opposite end of the political spectrum. Painter Philippe Chéry 1759-1838 studied with Jacques-Louis David and adopted his master's passionate support for the Revolution as well as his Neoclassical style. Engraver Pierre-Michel Alix 1762-1817 was a specialist in color printing best known for his portraits of leaders of the French Revolution and later of Napoleon and First Empire dignitaries. While the handsome binding here is unsigned the palmette roll on the covers is very similar but not identical to one used by Bozerian see Culot "Jean-Claude Bozerian" roll #44 and plate #XXIV. Perhaps our binder had trained in that atelier as the design and workmanship are certainly of that level. Drouhin unknown
