Tratta da un'importante collezione olandese, quest'ampia edizione ripercorre l'evoluzione dell'uso delle lettere in cataloghi dal design raffinato che presentano esemplari di caratteri in romano, corsivo, grassetto, semi-grassetto, stretti e larghi. Sono compresi anche margini, ornamenti, iniziali e decorazioni insieme ad alcuni esempi di litografie e lettere di calligrafi, pittori di insegne e iscrizioni di scalpellini. La prima sezione del libro raccoglie caratteri anteriori al Ventesimo secolo, corredati dal commento del curatore Cees de Jong e del collezionista Jan Tholenaar. La seconda parte invece esplora il periodo tra l'inizio del 1900 e la metà del Ventesimo secolo, con un excursus storico a cura di Alston W. Purvis. Francis Thompson (1859-1907) was an English poet and ascetic. After attending college, he moved to London to become a writer, became addicted to opium, and was a street vagrant for years. A married couple read his poetry and rescued him, publishing his first book Poems in 1893. Thompson lived as an unbalanced invalid in Wales and at Storrington, but wrote three books of poetry, with other works and essays, before dying of tuberculosis in 1907. SET/W50
