Spines chipped and torn at head. Hardbound. Horace (Horatio) Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford (1717-1797) was an English art historian, man of letters, antiquarian and Whig politician. He is now largely remembered for Strawberry Hill, the home he built in Twickenham, south-west London where he revived the Gothic style some decades before his Victorian successors. Famed too for his Gothic novel, 'The Castle of Otranto'. His ' Letters' are of significant social and political interest. SET/W57

Cet essai avait d'abord paru dans les 4 volumes Anecdotes of Painting de l'auteur. Cette édition privée, imprimée pour Walpole sur ses presses de Strawberry Hill, ne fut tirée qu'à 400 exemplaires, 200 pour être offerts aux amis de l'auteur, et 200 pour le Duc de Nivernais, le traducteur. Aucun exemplaire n'était destiné au commerce. La traduction française fait face au texte anglais sur les pp. de droite. Sur les rapports de Walpole avec le duc de Mancini-Nivernois voir : Blampignon. Le Duc de Nivernais (1888) pp. 324 et seq. Ce traité fit beaucoup pour répandre en France le goût que Kent avait introduit dans les jardins anglais. Peignot.
