Printers, like other manufacturers, put a proprietary mark on their goods?a design cut in wood or metal, printed on the title-page or at the end. It customarily consisted of a pictorial device, sometimes with ornament, sometimes with a motto; an indication of the printer's identity was often included?his name, initials or a personal sign. pp. xxxviii, 193. Printed on Van Gelder paper. Deckle edges. 8vo. Original stiff boards with flower dust wraps. Original solander case, nicked at front. Original floral slip case. Limited Edition printed by The Kynoch Press. Number 582 of which 725 copies are for sale in England and 485 for sale in the United States by Random House. First printed in 1591, Astrophel and Stella is an English sonnet sequence containing 108 sonnets and 11 songs. The name derives from the two Greek words, 'aster' (star) and 'phil' (lover), and the Latin word 'stella' meaning star. Thus Astrophel is the star lover, and Stella is his star. Some have suggested that the love represented may be a literal one as Sidney evidently connects Astrophel to himself and Stella to Penelope Rich, the wife of a courtier, Robert Rich, 3rd Baronet. Payne. A very nice example. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! PRESS/W43

Issued (by subscription) in forty-six eighty (46) original parts, bound in 28 magazine-format issues. 4to. 200 x 285 mm. Numerous engravings, portraits, maps and plates. Though the spines on many of the paper wraps are gone, this set is generally in wonderful condition. Books in parts are works which were published piecemeal (mainly in the 19th century) over a period of months or years. Each unit usually having a separate magazine-like cover. This method of publishing benefited the publisher as it was thought that the price of a weekly or monthly part at one shilling or a quarter was affordable to a wider readership than the price of pound sterling or $ 5.00 for a bound volume. They also qualified for mailing at a cheaper rate. Since they were meant to be bound by the purchaser, very few have survived into our present era. This set is extremely scarce in parts format. This edition apparently not in Arents (1957). **PRICE JUST REDUCED! PARTS 3
