One page text explains that in the summer of 1991, 92 designers from America and Canada were asked to make portraits of themselves. The result of that idea is this book. Illustrated in color and black & white with 92 full-page self portraits of a who's who of the design world in the early 1990's. List of Designers. Un doveroso omaggio a un grande tipografo-editore fiorentino ingiustamente dimenticato. Salvadore Landi (1831-1911), e il suo apprendistato tipografico di ragazzo di bottega, rivivono attraverso le poetiche pagine autobiografiche pubblicate in due versioni nel 1894 e nel 1917, entrambe qui ristampate in anastatica. A seguire un altro scritto poco noto del Landi, un rarissimo "brindisi tipografico", che i tipografi milanesi pubblicarono nel 1872 in omaggio al prototipografo Giovanni Fabri, in occasione della visita a Saluzzo, patria di Giambattista Bodoni e infine un ricordo di Landi scritto da Angelo Marinelli, lo stampatore che da Città di Castello (con Scipione Lapi) si spinse prima a Campobasso (con i tipografi-editori Colitti) e infine ad Acqui, dove aprì una propria stamperia. Scritti poco noti, dimenticati, piccoli tasselli di una grande e prestigiosa tradizione tipografica italiana, recuperati "archeologicamente" e offerti a beneficio di coloro che ancora credono nella forza e nell'importanza del libro tipografico. In particular it led him to patronize local art as represented by the tattoo-needles of Signor Andreas Pincini. Signor Pincini was, perhaps, the most brilliant master of tattoo craft that Italy had ever known, but his circumstances were decidedly impoverished, and for the sum of six hundred francs he gladly undertook to cover his client's back, from collar-bone down to waist-line, with a glowing representation of the Fall of Icarus." This copy signed in ink, by the designer, Stefan Sagmeister, on the title-page, and briefly inscribed. Otherwise clean and free of marks. This is the first edition published by Booth-Clibborn Editions in 2001, not the Abrams reprint. Illustrated in color and black & white throughout with 20 years worth of Stefan Sagmeister's designs 'even all the bad stuff'. 9" high X 7" wide, 291 pages. Uncommon first, more so signed. 8vo., First Edition, with title in red and black, 11 tipped-in illustrations in red by Pennell, neat signature on front paste-down, page-edges lightly browning; boards gilt, small tear at extreme head of backstrip, blank lower outer corner removed from one leaf (not affecting text), a good, firm copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter browned, frayed at edges and wanting most of backstrip. Pennell's pen drawings first appeared in Devinne's 'Christopher Plantin and the Plantin Museum' published for the Grolier Club in 1888.
