ill., ril. Questo volume esaustivo offre al lettore una panoramica completa del design tipografico, a partire dal 1628 fino alla prima metà del Ventesimo secolo. Tratta da un'importante collezione olandese, quest'ampia edizione ripercorre l'evoluzione dell'uso delle lettere in cataloghi dal design raffinato che presentano esemplari di caratteri in romano, corsivo, grassetto, semi-grassetto, stretti e larghi. Sono compresi anche margini, ornamenti, iniziali e decorazioni insieme ad alcuni esempi di litografie e lettere di calligrafi, pittori di insegne e iscrizioni di scalpellini. La prima sezione del libro raccoglie caratteri anteriori al Ventesimo secolo, corredati dal commento del curatore Cees de Jong e del collezionista Jan Tholenaar. La seconda parte invece esplora il periodo tra l'inizio del 1900 e la metà del Ventesimo secolo, con un excursus storico a cura di Alston W. Purvis. Tra gli autori di font presentati figurano William Caslon, Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke, Peter Behrens, Rudolf Koch, Eric Gill, Jan van Krimpen, Paul Renner, Jan Tschichold, A.M. Cassandre, Aldo Novarese e Adrian Frutiger.
