With engraved frontispiece title-page printed in red and black small woodcut on title-page in each volume and an engraving in text. 2 volumes. 20 1105 1 blank; 4 966 pp. First edition of a 2000-page pharmaceutical dictionary compiled by the Dutch physician and poet Kornelis Elzevier 1717-1761. It uses the Latin terms for an enormous number of compounds and substances with brief remarks in Dutch on their preparation and effectiveness. For various medicaments Elzevier mentions his sources which include Cordus Mesue Mynsicht Wecker and various other lexicons and pharmacopoeias. The engraved frontispiece shows an apothecary where the personifications of Truth and Experience expell Superstition and Stupidity. On the floor lie several books by popular physicians like Boerhaave Dodonaeus Lobel and Lemery with on the background busts of Hippocrates Galen and Paracelsus.Small corner torn off half-title of first volume some marginal water stains and foxing and marginal thumbing throughout. This rare variant edition has the uncorrected errors in pagination, but the engraved title has the correct S.P.Q.R. Old collector's manuscript note relating to this edition is attached. Florus was a Roman historian and poet. This is his Epitome of Roman History. Florus was said to have addressed the well-known lines to Hadrian beginning, "Ego nolo Caesar esse" [I do not wish to be a Caesar], which provoked Hadrian's satirical parody, "I do not wish to be a Florus," quoted by Spartianus. This important edition was edited by the great "monarch and tyrant of literature", Claude Salmasius (1593?-1653). The Dutch family of Elzevier (Elzevir; Elsevier) were the foremost printers of their time. They produced a vast variety of well printed scholarly and popular books; many in a very small handy format. Louis Elzevier, the founder of the firm, produced his first book in Leiden in 1583. The 'golden age' of Elzevier printing was between 1620 and 1680. Early 19th century English full crimson leather binding, modestly gold gilt, in the style of Sir John Thorold's Syston Park Library books. Engraved Ex Libris of Sir John Trollope, M.P. (1800-1874), who owned the hamlet of Ashton and was a book collector. The Trollopes were related to the great book collecting Thorold family, and probably used their binder for this book. Frontinus was the Roman Military Governor in Britain, and later, the superintendent of the water works at Rome. this book was bought from Maggs in 1977 by Edwin Wolf II, famed for his connections to the great bookseller Rosenbach and the Library Company of Philadelphia.
