1871774L12London: Longmans Green Reader and Dyer 1871. First edition. Cloth. Good. 9" by 6". None. The first and only edition of this scarce report on spiritualism by the London Dialectical Society. The first edition of this report of the London Dialectical society into the claims of spiritualism. The society were formed in 1867 to debate questions of ethics metaphysics and theology. In 1869 the London Dialectical Society formed a committee appointing 33 members whose aim was to investigate the phenomena alleged to be spiritual manifestations and to create a report. This book is the report from that investigation. With correspondence to the society including letters from Thomas Huxley who rejected involvement as 'if any body would endow me with the faculty of listening to the chatter of old women and curates in the nearest cathedral town I should decline the privilege having better things to do'. Other rejections declining involvement were from G H Lewes and Lord Lytton. Notable members of the society include Edward William Cox Charles Maurice Davies and Alfred Russel Wallace. The committee members attended seances and reported their findings. A scarce work which provides an insight into attitudes towards spiritualism at the end of the nineteenth century. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally sound. Splits to the head of joints and loss to the cloth at the head and tail of spine. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are bright with occasional light spots to pages. Good Longmans, Green, Reader and Dyer hardcover
