This volume is in two parts the first of which presents some 35 ancient poems ballads and songs dating from the Western Zhou to the Song Dynasty. The second part of the book consists of 42 'tz'u' Pinyin 'ci' style poems ranging in dates from the late Tang to the Qing. The tz'u is a poem of variable length lines but of defined rhyme scheme and tonal pattern written to be sung by the common people. All poems are presented in bilingual Chinese and English; notes provide further details on the lives and times of the poets. Not dated but published ca. 1950. Wrapper creased.
