During the 1830s the American Tract Society was a prolific publisher of evangelical Christian literature operating primarily from 150 Nassau Street in New York City. Its publications focused on promoting "vital godliness and sound morality" through the mass distribution of tracts and bound volumes. The Society compiled its individual pamphlets into numbered volumes each pamphlet typically 8 to 12 pages long. Sections individually paginated.<br><br>CONDITION: Covers have moderate rubbing and edge wear. The spine is missing the foot and crown and is heavily rubbed. This volume is in two parts the first of which presents some 35 ancient poems ballads and songs dating from the Western Zhou to the Song Dynasty. The second part of the book consists of 42 'tz'u' Pinyin 'ci' style poems ranging in dates from the late Tang to the Qing. The tz'u is a poem of variable length lines but of defined rhyme scheme and tonal pattern written to be sung by the common people. All poems are presented in bilingual Chinese and English; notes provide further details on the lives and times of the poets. Not dated but published ca. 1950. Wrapper creased.
