The final six photographs are made up of one of Honolulu and five of the Canadian Rockies.

Japan had only opened up to the West following the Convention of Kanagawa in 1854 and the Boshin War of 1868-9 delayed any considerable interest from Europeans until the start of the Meiji period. By the mid to late Meiji period wealthy European tourists started to appear more readily and the attitudes of Japan shifted to capitalise on the growing interest. In 1907 the Hotel Development Law allowed the construction of publicly owned hotels and in 1912 the Japan Travel Bureau was established. Luxurious hotels had already started to cater to Western tastes: the Yaami Hotel in Kyoto pl.30 was built in 1879 by Inoue Manchiku and renovated into the Western style as seen in the photograph in this album sometime in 1894.
[1894-c.1910]. hardcover

Minimal shelf wear. Professionally repaired and restored. Clean unmarked pages with minor toning. Illustration plates are clean and unmarked with no tearing. Family record has been written in and details the births deaths and marriages in the Parmelee family throughout the mid-1800s.

A copy of the Cooperstown 1829 edition provided the basis for Joseph Smith's translation of the Bible: He claimed to have been especially inspired by God to restore the true original text of the Scriptures which had been corrupted by copyists editors and revisors. Using a copy of this edition including the Apocrypha as his basis he proceeded-without benefit of knowing ancient languages and entirely by revelation-to dictate additions deletions and changes to the text which were written down by elders of the Mormon Church and incorporated into what became known as the Joseph Smith translation. This process of revision or "translation" was begun in 1830 and the bulk of it was completed by the end of 1833. The result is a unique text that differs from the Authorized Version in at least 3410 verses. It also substantially differs from all other versions of the Bible. Many of the changes made purport to correct verses that imply that God is the author of evil while some others are on unique points of Mormon doctrine. Cooperstown, (N.Y.) : H. & E. Phinney hardcover

1873List2825Eureka California 1873. Single 5 ½ x 12 inch ledger book with five small pages of notes and one short letter. Forty-two pages of the ledger filled out with many more blank. Some damage to spine on exterior otherwise very good to excellent. Offered here is a wharfage fee account ledger from Eureka California with dates between 1868 and 1873. The first Euro-American settlement at what is now Eureka on the Humboldt Bay was founded in 1850. It became a hub for bringing supplies to the Trinity Klamath and Salmon River mines both by water and over land and a major lumber manufacturing town with seven sawmills by 1858.1 Lumber vessels sent lumber down the Pacific coast as far as Chile. By the 1860s and 70s Eureka’s main exports were lumber and produce including pork and seafood via sailing vessels and there was also regular steamer service taking people and goods between there and San Francisco. Wharfage would have been paid at the port at Eureka for loading or unloading cargo; the ledger tracks ship names alongside either the names of men who loaded the cargo or the cargo type quantities and prices.

1 Owen Cochran Coy The Humboldt Bay Region 1850–1875 California State Historical Association 1929. unknown
47618Various publishers & dates. Extensive photographic archive documenting events on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico Border during the Mexican Revolution focused primarily on the Border Wars in Texas and the Veracruz Incident of 1914 comprised entirely of contemporary images all but a few of which are original vintage prints. The collection includes:

• Sixty-one commercially-produced real-photo postcards ca. 14cm x 9cm or the reverse;
• Six commercially-printed postcards using non-photographic processes same dimensions;
• Three carte-de-visite portraits ca 9cm x 6cm mounted to cards;
• Eight small-format photographs ranging from 14cm x 8cm to 11cm x 16cm of which three appear to be commercial images;
• Three 8x10 20cm x 25cm photographic prints printed at some later date from original plates but apparently not contemporary;
• One vintage 4x6 10cm x 16cm photograph mounted on board.

All but a dozen or so images are captioned in the negative and most are additionally captioned in pencil in a later hand on verso. Approximately half the images include no photo credit; of those that do we have identified the following photographers: W.H. Horne D.W. Hoffman Walter P. Hadsell Van Zile & Chalk and L.O. She.

Condition is generally Very Good. Two of the photo postcards are damaged with abrasions to significant portions of image area; the remainder show various degrees of edge wear aging and creasing but by and large image quality remains excellent. None of the postcards are postally used though a few include brief contemporary notes on verso. The refusal of Mexican President Porfirio Dîaz to cede power to his rival Francisco Madero in the elections of 1910 resulted in a violent large-scale revolt by campesinos and leftists setting off the thirty-year long Mexican Revolution. American involvement in the conflict began in 1911 when President William H. Taft under the guise of heightening border security moved to back Díaz against the rebels. The resulting mobilization - Taft sent more than 20000 American troops nearly a quarter of all American forces to the Mexican border with especially heavy concentrations in Texas and New Mexico - was to that date the largest mobilization of American military forces in peacetime. At the same time many Americans whose sympathies were not aligned with the Díaz dictatorship including anarchists wobblies Native Americans and more than a few soldiers of fortune went south to fight on the side of the rebels. The resulting border conflict which took place over nearly a decade occasionally pitting American insurrectos against American Federal troops resulted in thousands of Mexican and hundreds of American deaths.

The Border Wars reached their climax around the period 1912-1914 which happened to coincide with a near-hysterical vogue for postcards among the American public. The result is that the Mexican Revolution is perhaps the first major armed conflict to have been extensively photo-documented in real time and certainly the first to have had a significant mass audience for that documentation. At least three hundred commercial photographers have been identified in association with the Mexican Revolution and they produced tens of thousands of images ranging from the relatively innocuous e.g. peaceful street and harbor scenes in Veracruz to the horrific lynchings and sidewalk cremations.

This entire range of content is represented in the current collection along with portraits of most of the key players on the Mexican side including El Presidente Porfirio Díaz; his primary rival and successor Francisco Madero; Madero's successor by coup Victoriano Huerta; and various military figures including General Juan Navarro Felipe Angeles Ramírez and numerous others. Many of these semi-professional images though produced with commercial intent "professional" remains a guarded term in the context of what was essentially battlefield exploitation photography are valuable for their almost off-hand depictions of violent day-to-day life on the contested border including the casual destruction and acceptance of death from both sides that seemed to define this conflict. Of particular note are numerous of photographs of African-American troops the so-called "Buffalo Soldiers" as well as at least one image depicting Native American soldiers in uniform. Locales represented include Camp Grossmont in California; El Paso and Laredo in Texas and their cross-border sister cities Juarez and Nuevo Laredo; Veracruz site of the American incursion of 1914 known as the "Veracruz Incident"; and various unidentified encampments and battle sites in both Texas and Mexico.

A wide-ranging and compelling photographic collection documenting not only a key period in U.S. military diplomacy - one which for better or worse set the tone for American-Mexican relations for the succeeding century - but also a tangible manifestation of the first widespread public incarnation in America of the picture-postcard as a vehicle for both propaganda and photojournalism. unknown
13734Norwalk CT: Easton Press 1980. Hardcover. Very good. 53 volumes illustrated. In the publisher's full leather in various sizes and colors. Silk endpapers all edges gilt silk ribbons etc. Please read carefully: Overall a very good set with some notable condition issues. This particular set sat in a bookcase undisturbed for decades. Some of the volumes perhaps 1/4 of them were exposed to sun for part of the day and thus show fading to the spine. Many volumes have varying levels of scuffing/spotting to the gilt edges see worst examples in images provided. Nearly all of the volumes have the previous owner's bookplate usually attached to a front blank page though sometimes on the endpapers. We noted one volume which shows a dampstain to the front endpapers though the exterior and interior are not visibly affected. Many volumes are quite fresh and lovely and they all look terrific on the shelf. Issued serially over several years the set is difficult to find complete. Unlike some of the larger sets done by Easton Press and Franklin Library this one will only require one smallish bookcase to display. An excellent sampling of American novels poetry and even some non-fiction Lewis and Clark's Journals writings of Lincoln and Jefferson etc. Please note that overseas postage will be costly perhaps prohibitively so.

This set even with noted flaws is still gift-quality and can be proudly displayed read and enjoyed by its next owner.

A full list of titles follows:

1. 19649467various places: various imprints 1964. Very good. A substantial collection of presidential campaign sheet music. Condition varies but all elements are complete but for occasional large chips. Some elements have clearly been removed from old bound volumes and adequately repaired at the spine. Particular strengths include Theodore Roosevelt William McKinley Franklin Roosevelt Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy. While most of the music is campaign-related there are some exceptions including music that was clearly published during various administrations as propaganda along with some memorial volumes published upon the death of a president. Of course there are also a number of campaign songs for candidates that lost the elections John W. Davis Al Smith Nixon's 1960 effort etc. though the original collector's focus was on victorious campaigns. In researching various individual titles they each tend to be uncommon in the marketplace and OCLC frequently only finds fewer than a half dozen often fewer than 3 physical separately listed holdings. While it's likely that more examples exist in bound uncatalogued volumes or at the bottom of uncatalogued boxes this colelction is a chance to acquire a significant and well-organized quantity of presidential sheet music whose content and thematic covers shed real light on the campaign themes of the ages and how political parties and their supporters engaged with the wider public.
