Fine. SCARCE. In 1942 Paschini was commissioned by the president of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences father Agostino Gemelli to write a biography of Galileo Galilei. Paschini worked during the war years and sent the definitive manuscript to Cardinal Giovanni Mercati at the beginning of 1945. However the work met the resistance of the Holy Office and of the same Father Gemelli who left Paschini unanswered even after his letter of solicitation. He was then answered by the substitute Giovanni Battista Montini future Pope Paul VI to whom he had addressed. The latter made him read the reply of the Holy Office which attacked the work with the argument that the proofs put forward by Galileo in favor of heliocentrism were not sufficient and furthermore it was not considered appropriate to publish a work that appeared as an apology of the Pisan scientist. / After Paschini's death the definitive manuscript was extensively revised by the Belgian Jesuit Edmond Lamalle before being published in 1964. Uncommon survivors from the Golden Gate Expo of 1939 the two publications listed the events for February 18 and 19 the very first two opening days and February 23 through 25 respectively while they also displayed two large maps each - the first one depicting Treasure Island with detailed captions of streets and venues and the second one containing "Key to Shopping News Stores" and possible routes for reaching Treasure Island. Oakland Shopping News published twice weekly in a circulation of 102 000 copies and distributed in Oakland Alameda and Berkeley was an offshoot publication of the San Francisco Shopping News - a newspaper advertising local businesses and approximately 760 of their commodities with descriptions and prices in each issue. The text block is in very good condition and is now tight and the pages are generally clean and free of any heavy tanning or foxing. A small octavo measuring 7 1/2" by 4 1/2" with faint dampness stains running from pages 173 to 240. The full title reads; "The Mariner's Library or Voyager's Companion. Containing Narratives of the Most Popular Voyages from the time of Columbus to the present day; with accounts of remarkable shipwrecks naval adventures the whale-fishery &c: The whole interspersed with Numerous Sketches of Nautical Life". 492 pages of text. Illustrated with a frontispiece engraving of the Constitution and seventeen other engravings throughout the text. Sabin 44591 but refers to 1834 publication by C. Gaylord of Boston.
