Aparently-unrecorded short bibliographies they were released by Paul Elder and Company - booksellers and publishers in San Francisco - the first one featuring "A list of books that thus far have appeared having as their theme some aspect of this marvelous achievement." which Paul Elder had in stock. It listed 27 publications and included all relevant bibliographical information including titles authors bindings prices and in some cases short descriptions. An early 20th century reader compiled and published by a board of representatives from the Free Czech School in New York specifically for Czech immigrant children in the United States. Large-scale Czech immigration to the US began in the 1840s - sparked by the revolutionary movements at the beginning of the 19th century. Initially settling in Midwestern cities for the cheap farmland available by the 1870s many of them migrated to New York and specifically the Lower East Side in the area around Tompkins Square. By 1900 the Czech community in New York numbered over 27 000 people. A 1941 Pontiac catalog and promotional book its purpose was to help one âmake the correct choice of a new motor car and to tell one why in interesting words and picturesâ¦Pontiac should be oneâs choice.â Leaning heavily on advertising the new Pontiac Torpedo models the book listed standard colors and two-tone color combinations steering wheels deluxe features and more while entire chapters were dedicated to describing and proving to the potential customers why Pontiac was the safest prettiest fastest etc. car. The illustrations both on the wraps and all the cartoons were dubiously based on the Pontiacâs Rebellion â the 1763 war launched by a loose confederation of Native American tribes from the Great Lakes Region against the British following the French and Indian War 1754 â 1763 that was named after the Ottawa leader Pontiac who was the most prominent of the leaders of the conflict. 1925TB22610Salem: Marine Research Society 1925. First Edition. First printing Very good- in 1/4 brown cloth and marbled paper covered boards with gilt text on the spine and illustrated end sheets. The tips of the boards are covered in vellum and the top edge of the text block is gilt. The cloth at the head of the spine shows a 1/4" deep closed tear with shallow related chipping of`1/32" on either side. There is the ghost of a prior owner's book plate on the first free end page. The title page and many of the illustrated plates within the text show mild tanning and offsetting to the facing pages. Without its issued dust jacket. One of only ninety-seven "vellum" copies printed and this copy is identified as number "95". An untold number of plain cloth and paper copies were printed. 353 pages of text including an index and illustrated with 2 maps a frontispiece and 30 black and white photographs and engravings. The text contains five narratives of accounts of ship wreck and abandonment in the south Atlantic and in the South Pacific. With an introduction by Captain Elliot Snow.
