19094Volumes nos1-8 all publ. Theodore Presser in Association with Universal Edition 1958-1968. 8vo each volume an 8vo bound in printed wraps of varying colors by the Austrian designer Willi Bahner. Spines a bit worn with reading creases and some light chipping to paper and creasing to the wraps but otherwise a sturdy very good set. Scarce complete. The English language edition of one of the most important contemporary music periodicals which began publication in German in 1954 out of the circle of composers which coalesced around the Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk NWDR. The covers are brilliantly and minimally designed by the important Austrian designer Willi Bahner. The contributors are largely European though John Cage offers several important texts. The periodical was the most important English language source of information for European experimental and serial music though this English language version was often contentiously received by English language readers. The periodical came to an end after a falling out between the two editors with the epic issue no. 8. To the credit of the periodical one of the most bitter attacks on the magazine was published in die Reihe itself an attack on work by Stockhausen by the Dutch physicist Adriaan Fokker - a fitting coda to a provocative and contentious periodical. 21212Original advertising poster with printed linocut and text on brown paper 31.5 x 43 cm folded once announcing the exhibition at Galerie St. Nicolaus in Vejbystrand Sweden from June 22-July 14 1963. This summer show for the newly-founded Bauhaus Situationniste included a large number of artists who were expelled from the SI in 1962. 13734Norwalk CT: Easton Press 1980. Hardcover. Very good. 53 volumes illustrated. In the publisher's full leather in various sizes and colors. Silk endpapers all edges gilt silk ribbons etc. Please read carefully: Overall a very good set with some notable condition issues. This particular set sat in a bookcase undisturbed for decades. Some of the volumes perhaps 1/4 of them were exposed to sun for part of the day and thus show fading to the spine. Many volumes have varying levels of scuffing/spotting to the gilt edges see worst examples in images provided. Nearly all of the volumes have the previous owner's bookplate usually attached to a front blank page though sometimes on the endpapers. We noted one volume which shows a dampstain to the front endpapers though the exterior and interior are not visibly affected. Many volumes are quite fresh and lovely and they all look terrific on the shelf. Issued serially over several years the set is difficult to find complete. Unlike some of the larger sets done by Easton Press and Franklin Library this one will only require one smallish bookcase to display. An excellent sampling of American novels poetry and even some non-fiction Lewis and Clark's Journals writings of Lincoln and Jefferson etc. Please note that overseas postage will be costly perhaps prohibitively so. <br /> <br /> This set even with noted flaws is still gift-quality and can be proudly displayed read and enjoyed by its next owner. <br /> <br /> A full list of titles follows: <br /> <br /> 1. Artwork in no. 3 by Robert La Vigne Daniel Moore. Ephemeris provides some insight into the magazine scene that developed in and around Jack Spicer’s San Francisco. Throughout all three issues poems are dedicated to Spicer and written in the Spicerian manner. Poets who played in Spicer’s shadows like Ellingham Persky and Stanley are represented throughout its pages as is Frank O’Hara Ebbe Borregaard Joanne Kyger and Charles Olson. Ephemeris II features a map on the cover and Issue one has an astrological chart. The magazine is truly a chart and a map of late 1960s San Francisco and the vestiges of the Spicer Circle Birmingham. For example Ephemeris features several advertisements for what is now a lost book culture: Serendipity and Dave Haselwood Books for example. The third issue switches to a newspaper format with pieces on Merlin the Birth of Venus and the Apocalypse accompanied by numerous illustrations and drawings by Robert LaVigne and Daniel Moore. paperback
