No. 10A RSS.With the rapid rise in households with a telephone in the 50ies and 60ies a new and more effective switching system was needed. The Bell System developed the No. 1 ESS Electronic Switching System to meet with these demands. The ESS made servicing easier but a more automatic and centralized structure was needed in order to meet the demands of smaller businesses. "With the evolution in electronic technology currently in progress it was evident that intelligent remotely controlled devices could be brought into central office switching environment. A system which could effectively and economically remote large portions of its network over large distances could rapidly be deployed over major segments of the Bell System network. The era of electronic switching began with the introduction of the No. 1 ESS into commercial service in 1965. . In spite of this activity there remains a large segment of Bell System central offices that until the introduction of the 10A RSS could not justify the introduction of electronic switching technology." A complete run of the celebrated series which features 100 uniformly sized books of various colors giving each artist a 16-page canvas to exhibit a cohesive body of work. Each volume is limited to 500 copies and each contains one photographic print tipped in and signed by the artist--hence the name of the series. Conceived in 1998 as a way to make original art more affordable titles were originally released in groups of four generally twice a year beginning in 2000 and ending in 2017 with most copies reserved in advance for subscribers. Complete sets of the 100 titles are uncommon as many volumes are out of print; even more uncommon are those with the deluxe box sets as few were issued toward the beginning of the series. 17372A substantial nearly-complete collection comprising a total of 93 issues from the 107 that were published. - 8 out of 15 are OPEN CITY PRESS appeared in San Francisco - 85 out of 92 are OPEN CITY appeared in Los Angeles. The set includes 78 issues with Bukowski contributions 72 of which are his column "Notes of a Dirty Old Man". San Francisco and Los Angeles 1961-1968. Printed on newsprint. All issues folded at least once as issued in generally good condition normal endemic browning a few issues with ragged edges light damage or light dampstaining. Sizes: at first tabloid printed in b/w with only occasionally colour added after issue 52May 1968 the size doubles to 57x44 cm. and most front and last pages are in colour. Underground weekly noted for its coverage of radical politics rock music psychedelic culture and the "Notes of a Dirty Old Man" column by Charles Bukowski first published here. Editor and founder: John Bryan whose signature is on 17 copies with art director Joan Barr and contributing editors Alex Apostolides Bob Garcia Robert Igriega Bill Margolis John Wilcock etc. Member of the Underground Press Syndicate. Many issues have spectacular lay-out artwork and photocompositions. "John Charles Bryan November 12 1934 - February 1 2007 was a journalist who quit the San Francisco Chronicle in 1964 to found the brief-lived San Francisco bohemian tabloid weekly Open City Press publishing 15 issues from Nov. 18 1964 to March 17-23 1965. Open City Press was a local forerunner of the Berkeley Barb providing coverage of the Free Speech Movement. It was a one-man operation. In the beginning Bryan bought a case of metal monotype and hand-set his own copy pulling proofs to paste up for cheap offset reproduction." cf: Wikipedia. Bukowski's contributions started in Vol. 1 no 6 with the story "If I could only be asleep". After closure of Open City Press Bryan relocated to Southern California. After a stint working for Art Kunkin as managing editor of the Los Angeles Free Press he launched Open City in Los Angeles starting the volume numbering with vol. 2 no. 1 May 5-11 1967. In March 1968 he was prosecuted on an obscenity charge for printing an image of a nude woman in a record company advertisement for Leon Russell. Six months later in September 1968 there was a second obscenity bust over the short story "Skinny Dynamite" by Jack Micheline about the sexual antics of an underage girl in a literary supplement to Open City edited by Charles Bukowski. The cost of Bryan's legal defense and a $1000 fine on the first charge eventually put the shoestring operation out of business. Issues present in this collection are: "Open City Press." San Francisco 1964-1965 numbered as Volume 1 : The announcement for issue 1 and Vol. 1 issues 3-7 10 and 11published from November 1964-Feb.23.1965 out of the total number of 15 issues published. Then continued as "Open City". Los Angeles 1967 - 1968: Volume 2 : Issues 1-4 6-20 23-25 27 28 30-33 35-43 45 47 49-50 52-83 87-91 66 is mis-numbered 65 on cover; 90 is mis-numbered 89. All except no. 18 have Bukowski contributions. Number 20 First National Edition. The Pot Scene. Folded vertically at center with marginal toning to extremities and a few small corner creases; Near Fine. Original advertising poster for the Winterhilfswerk or WHW a social relief program designed to provide food clothing coal and other items to needy German citizens during the winter months October-March. The program was instituted under the government of Heinrich Bruning in 1931 though Hitler would ultimately claim sole credit for the idea. Depending on whether an individual was single or married and how many children he or she had recipients were entitled to a weekly/monthly stipend and rations of food and coal to ensure they and their families would neither starve nor freeze. Indeed the program's motto was "None shall starve or freeze." Under Nazi rule all German citizens were required to give to the program - one of Hitler's ingenious ways of uniting the nation. Large donations to the fund were also a means of establishing ones loyalty to the Nazi Party without the commitment of joining it. <br /> <br /> The present example explains how to donate to the fund and provides a detailed chart showing exactly how much individual or family recipients could benefit from the program.
