The very scarce complete volume work containing an expansive history on the history of Warwick including topography social and political history and topography along with numerous plates and illustrations. Mix of first editions and reprints very scarce complete eight volume set.Issued privately to subscribers only for the University of London Institute of Historical Research. Illustrations include a frontispiece to each volume as well as numerous illustrated plates and in-text illustrations.Volumes VII and VII are presented in the original unclipped dust wrappers.Part of the 'Victoria History of the Counties of England' which was a 'National Historic Survey' with the intention of recording the history of every county of England in detail. This is a wonderful and comprehensive history on the county of Warwickshire with information on the area's history as well as topographical descriptions. This particular series was originally meant to be made up of four volumes before being expanded upon in later years with a change of editors and publishers. Volume I 1904 includes a natural history of Warwickshire followed by essays such as 'Romano-British Remains' and 'Text of the Warwickshire Domesday'. With one colour plate three black-and-white plates one double-paged map one full-page map six map illustrations and forty-three in-text illustrations. Volume II 1965 reprint includes 'Ecclesiastical History' 'Religious Houses' 'Social and Economic History 'Industries' and 'Schools'. With three illustrated plates. Volume III 1965 reprint includes information on the topography of Warwickshire as well as the 'Barlichway Hundred'. With twenty-four illustrated plates and forty-nine in-text illustrations. Volume IV 1947 continues with the topography of the county looking at the 'Hemlingford Hundred'. With twenty-six illustrated plates and fifty-four in-text illustrations. Volume V 1949 examines the topography of the 'Kington Hundred' as well as other areas within the county. With twenty-three illustrated plates and forty-eight in-text illustrations.Volume VI 1951 examines the topography of 'Knightlow Hundred' and surrounding villages with eighteen illustrated plates and forty-two in-text illustrations. Volume VII 1968 includes information on the city of Birmingham 'Economic and Social History' 'Religious History' 'Public Education' 'Charities for the Poor' and other chapters. With four illustrated plates two full-page illustrations and fifty-seven in-text illustrations.Vol VIII 1969 includes information on the city of Coventry and the borough of Warwick with chapters such as 'List of Streets' 'Documents in the Coventry City Record Office' 'Mills' and 'Social History to 1700'. With four illustrated plates two full-page illustrations and fifty-two in-text illustrations. Written by a range of contributors such as T. C. Cantrill J. E. Bagnall Colbran J. Wainwright F. O. Pickard-Cambridge and Reginald A. Smith. Volumes I and II edited by H. Arthur Doubleday and William Page with later volumes edited by L. F. Salzman and W.B. Stephens. Collated complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally excellent with minimal bumping and just a bit of bumping to the head and tail of spine. Dust wrappers are very smart with minimal edge wear and chipping particularly to the spine region. Wraps are lightly age-toned with a tape repair to the reverse of Volume VII. Offsetting to endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Errata leaf correcting publisher's information adhered to title page of Vol VII. Most of the essays contained in The Visitor first appeared in The Public Ledger which is one of the worlds longest continually running magazines. "Today it provides agricultural commodity news analyses and prices. When established in 1760 however it not only contained prices of commodities in London but a wide variety of political commercial and society news and commentary" taken from Wikipedia. Though the title names William Dodd as the "publisher" he was really an editor to this collection which was technically published by Edward and Charles Dilly as shown in our listing. 2 Volumes complete. This set has been professionally rebound in beautiful black cloth hardcover boards with gilt lettering and design on the spine. Both volumes are completely free from handwriting or marginalia and show minimal foxing/staining which is rare for a set of this age. Volume one has some bio-predation a tiny tunnel presumably termite which starts near the front of the book and continues all the way to the back. It is very small barely noticeable except for at the very back pages and is located in the margin so it does not affect readability whatsoever. Vol 1: ix 310 pp. Vol 2: 307 pp. Indexed 308-313.
