Volume III VI and XIV of the New Series of this quarterly journal and review The Reliquary and Illustrated Archaeologist devoted to the study of the early Pagan and Christian antiquities of Britain; Medieval architecture and ecclesiology; the development of the arts and industries of mankind in past times; and the survivals of ancient usages and appliances in the present. Volume III 1897 and VI 1900 were edited by J. Romilly Allen 1847-1907 a British archaeologist particularly interested in the antiquities of Wales and Scotland. Volume XIV 1908 is a presentation copy and was edited by Rev. J. Charles Cox 1843-1919 an English cleric and local historian. The War Illustrated was a British war magazine published in London. It was first released in 1914 eighteen days after the United Kingdom declared war on Germany. Regular issues continued throughout World War I. The magazine was discontinued after the 8th Feb 1919 issue but returned in 1939 following the start of World War II. The magazine closed permanently ceased production on 11th April 1947. The magazine contained personal accounts of the war by war correspondents such as Hamilton Fyfe and Luigi Barzini Sr descriptions and illustrations of Victoria Cross actions and articles by various authors including retrospectives of great battles and events in the war. These volumes include articles on Pearl Harbour The Luftwaffe The London Victory Celebrations of 1946 and the Nuremberg trials held between 1945 and 1946. An incomplete run between January 1944 and January 1947. Volumes as follows: Volume 7 No. 172-178 and 180. Jan 1944- May 1944 Volume 8 No. 205 April 1945 Volume 10 No 231- 240 and 243 244 and 249. An early collected edition. Comprising five series of 'Whistle-Binkie; A Collection of Songs for the Social Circle' bound together with 'Songs for the Nursery'. Rebacked in contemporary full diced calf with handwritten spine title and chipped reference label to the spine tail. Each series is bound with separate dated title pages and pagination. Bound with half title to 'Songs for the Nursery'. Frontispiece to First Series. Whistle-Binkie offers a collection of Scottish poetry and song anthology typically styled in an imitation of Robert Burns. The series was enduringly popular and the final Whistle Binkie anthology appeared in 1890.The term 'Whistle-Binkie' being here applied to any kind of popular entertainer whether singer story-teller or indeed whistler; John D. Carrick helpfully supplied an erudite dissertation on the subject to the 1839 edition. Subsequent series were edited by Alexander Roger eventually running to the five series presented here. The work completed in 1843 with a sixth part called "Songs for the Nursery" a very valuable and curious collection of modern nursery rhymes and songs. Rebacked in contemporary full calf with handwritten spine title and chipped reference label to the spine tail. Externally with rubbing to the extremities and loss to the spine tail and title and reference labels. Minor damp marks to the rear board. Bookplate of James Balfour to the front paste down with ink impression of James S. Reid. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with the occasional spot or handling mark. No other copies found in libraries. The first issue 1904 is illustrated with seven monochrome plates the second 1905 has seven the third 1906 has eight and the fourth 1907 has seven. Collated complete. A lovely early twentieth century rare journal on the topography of these areas of southwest England. Rebound in half calf with cloth boards. Externally smart. There is some rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. There is some slight loss to the head of the spine. Internally firmly bound. In 2002 the name was changed again to Absolute Magnitude & Aboriginal Science Fiction when the publishers acquired the rights to Aboriginal Science Fiction. Absolute Magnitude was published by DNA Publications and edited by Warren Lapine. During this period it was headquartered in Radford Virginia. Although it was supposed to be a quarterly magazine its actual releases were irregular. After releasing twenty-one issues under the Absolute Magnitude title plus two as Harsh Mistress Spring 2005 issue was the final issue of the magazine. 64 pages.
