Can art express questions about justice? Could art, perhaps, even create justice? In Aesthetic Justice, sociologist Pascal Gielen and curator Niels Van Tomme invite a variety of artists and critical thinkers-including Zoe Beloff, Arne De Boever, Mark Fisher, Matt Fraser, Tessa Overbeek, Kerry James Marshall, Viktor Misiano, Carlos Motta, Nat Muller, Julie Atlas Muz, Gerald Raunig, Dieter Roelstraete, Hito Steyerl, Julia Svetlichnaja, Hakan Topal, Samuel Vriezen and Christian Wolff-to reflect on new futures for the notion and practice of justice. The book offers thought-provoking views on the ways in which art may confront and potentially redirect social and political futures. Incorporating analyses of contemporary artworks that challenge the social, political or economic status quo, as well as interviews with artists and theoretical reflections, Aesthetic Justice considers the liberating potential of aesthetic frameworks and suggests alternatives for a more just future. — Testi: Beloff Zoe, Van Tomme Niels et al. pagg. 320; rileg. brossura. This encyclopedic book examines the history of performances by obscure Japanese artists in Japan from 1957 to 1970, with focus on the Anti-art movement in Japan in the 1960s. The book aims to place those artists in the cultural and political context of the anarchist tendencies of that era in Japan, which also manifested themselves in the contemporary counter-culture and political activism. The book consists of four sections. The first section points out the absence of performance art in the discussion of Japanese art history and art criticism and discusses the cause of such neglect. The second and third section presents the history of Japanese performance arts by documenting performance groups, art movements, and individual performance artists. The fourth section provides an analysis of political, cultural, and social backgrounds to the Anti-art performances and what it infers today. This book also includes photographs of performances, an index of artists, artist groups, and other items, and a chronological table of events spanning 30 years from 1945 to 1975. — Testi: Kuroda Raiji. “As I see it, creativity includes things like opening a hotel in Kabul,” explained Alighiero Boetti, and he went on to realize this plan in 1971 on his second stay in Afghanistan, during which he opened the One Hotel with his friend Gholam Dastaghir. The hotel remained open for six years. Annemarie Sauzeau was married to the Italian artist for more than twenty years, and in her personal reminiscence, she recounts Boetti’s time in Kabul, where she occasionally accompanied him. How was it possible to open a hotel in Afghanistan? Who were the hotel guests? What happened on a typical day in the hotel? She also describes the close relationship Boetti had with this country, where he spent at least four weeks twice a year, and which assumed a significant role in his oeuvre. — Testi: Sauzeau Annemarie. Italian philosopher Antonio Negri has declared that "Every kind of change belongs to a form of community art," inverting the convention that community art can be an integral component of social change and extending the rubric of art to propose a commons of all those striving to effect change in social, economic, technological and ecological arenas. So how do these endeavors influence and act upon one another? In Community Art, artists and theorists Tilde Björfors, Bertus Borgers, Paul De Bruyne, Changchengh, Luigi Coppola, An De bisschop, Miguel Escobar Varela, Jan Fabre, Alison M. Friedman, Pascal Gielen, Sonja Lavaert, Carol Martin, Antonio Negri, Alida Neslo, Tessa Overbeek, Lionel Popkin, Richard Schechner, Hein Schoer, Ricky Seabra, Jonas Staal, Klaas Tindemans, Luk van den Dries, Quirijn Lennert van den Hoogen, Hans van Maanen, Bart Van Nuffelen and Karel Vanhaesebrouck explore the practices of artistic and social movements in western and non-western societies. — Testi: De Bruyne Paul, Gielen Pascal. pagg. ple; rileg. brossura. Dread: The Dizziness of Freedom reflects on possible re-articulations of the concept of dread in our times. Associated with the "dizziness of freedom" by Søren Kierkegaard, and with "the ecstasy of nihilism" by China Miéville, the experience of dread is a defining characteristic of the contemporary human condition, and--according to the contributors to this volume--an essential and potentially productive emotion. However dark and fatalistic its connotations, through its dialectical coupling of caution and transgression, of paralysis and overdrive, dread allows us to imagine the world differently. Through conversations with and essays by some of today's foremost cultural commentators, this book explores the creative agency of dread--an agency that is created by the very forces wishing to suppress or even destroy it--as well as its politics and related conceptions of fear and anxiety. — Testi: Mieville China, van 't Zelfde Juha et al. pagg. ple; rileg. brossura. In this collection of essays, Amsterdam art historian and critic Camiel van Winkel digs up the conceptual roots of contemporary art, design and photography to argue that the art of today is, as a whole, "post-conceptual." Focusing on the conceptual artists of the years 1965-1975, van Winkel examines how the art of that era continues to inform the art world today. Highly polemical and very readable, During the Exhibition the Gallery Will Be Closed looks at the cultural dominance of information in art discourse, the professionalization of artistic practices, the debate over "good design" in art and the role institutions play in art theory. It is an essential collection for any understanding of that idea, belief and desire we today call "the artist." — Testi: van Winkel Camiel. pagg. 304; rileg. brossura. This book collects some of R. Buckminster Fuller's most important recent writings on the subject of spaceship Earth: the big, interconnected, total system that is "the only one we've got." These articles stress the need for considering our planet as a whole, rather than breaking it into its parts-as most of us continue to do. This theme is crucial to the thinking of Bucky Fuller, who, in addition to his many other appellations, has been called the "godfather" of the Whole Earth Catalog. — Testi: Buckminster Fuller R..
