Fair. 8vo 187 pages lacks free endpaper and half-title small waterstain at head of spine original diced cloth lacks top half of spine front hinge broken.

Presentation Copy from the Author to his Wife: " A New Year's Gift for / my Dear Wife from / her true Scotchman / Grant / 1st January 1859; " With inked note that "I received this book from / Grant Thorburn's widow July /81". A remarkable character Thorburn emigrated from Scotland to New York in 1794. He evolved from being a nailmaker to prominent seedsman. He was the inspiration for the protagonist "Lawrie Todd" in John Galt's triple-decker LAWRIE TODD OR THE SETTLERS IN THE WOODS 1830. He married his third wife in 1853. This work is vigorous counter-point to the travel books by Frances Trollope and Isaac Fidler from 1832. It is highly opinionated and provoked a short book response by William Carver A BONE TO GNAW FOR GRANT THORBURN. Note: with at least one pencilled gloss probably by the 1881 owner.
