2011SKU2010029162Museum of Contemporary Art Denver 2011. First edition. Hardcover. Like New. 0x0x0. Signed by Author. Inscribed "For Jeffrey Hermann Nitsch". Autographed copies rarely offered. From the exhibition held February 4 2011–May 29 2011. Bloodlines: Paintings by Hermann Nitsch highlighted the explosive and vibrant canvases produced during the artist's dramatic "Aktionen" or performance actions and featured six major "Schüttbilder" spill paintings as well as related objects and music. As relics of Nitsch’s dynamic and exuberant performances these paintings and the related vestments reflect two primary sources of inspiration: the sanctity of religious ritual and the drama of Abstract Expressionist painting. The works offer a glimpse into the artist’s comprehensive creative production from his music compositions to the vestments incorporated into the paintings to the forceful abstract poured and spilled paintings themselves. This exhibition is a small tribute to this pioneering artist’s prolific career as a performer impresario composer agitator and painter. Hermann Nitsch was born in 1938 in Vienna where he currently lives and works. He was a member of the Vienna Actionists group and opened the Hermann Nitsch Museum in Mistelbach Austria in 2007. His works are included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art New York; Tate Gallery London; and the Essl Collection of Contemporary Art Austria among others. "Coming of age as an artist in the 1950s Alex Katz set out to reinvent representational painting by applying lessons learned from postwar abstraction. Initially he struggled to find an audience destroying hundreds of canvases. This book is the first survey of the artwork from this momentous decade one in which Katz began to paint outdoors innovated with collages invented the cutout and met Ada del Moro his wife and muse. The authors consider how he and his peers borrowed from one another leaning on photography and mining both nineteenth-century portraiture and other creative arts and examine his conceptual investment in serial imagery. The result is a fascinating study of a young artist laying the groundwork for an astonishingly successful career and a fresh look at the aesthetic exchanges among painters in and around the New York School." - Publisher. 199928865Lincoln:: University of Nebraska Press 1999. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine tight copy in a Near Fine dust jacket with a crease to the front flap. Originally published in France in 1934 Break of Day is André Breton’s second collection of critical and polemical essays following The Lost Steps. In fewer than two hundred pages Breton captures the first full decade of the surrealist movement. The collection opens with an essay composed in 1924 that examines key elements of surrealism and concludes with Breton’s harsh revaluation in 1933 of automatic writing. Among the other essays are “Burial Denied” and “In Self-Defense” two pieces that “mark surrealism’s conscious break from the mainstream and the beginning of its attempts to work alongside the French Communist Party.” Also included are “Psychiatry Standing before Surrealism” which addresses Breton’s complex ambivalent views on mental illness and the emerging psychiatric establishment; “Introduction to Achim von Arnim's Strange Tales” which reveals surrealism’s debt to such precursors as the German romantics and delineates a surrealistic aesthetic of the macabre; and “Picasso in His Element” in which Breton demonstrates his formidable talents as a critic of the visual arts.
