Kenneth Auchincloss 1937-2003 was a journalist author and collector of fine printing and private press books. He and his wife Lee "played host to memorable gatherings of printers artists and wood-engravers from both sides of the Atlantic" Independent. Auchincloss was widely travelled journeying to "more continents while stricken with cancer than most people do in a lifetime of good health" Gordon. He and Lee evidently met Calvino in Rome one year after the author's move to Piazza Campo Marzio near the Pantheon where he was occupied editing the work of Tommaso Landolfi for Rizzoli. Octavo. Original yellow cloth backed red boards titles to spine in black ISBN and star to rear in black red endpapers. With dust jacket. Head of spine and tips slightly bumped a few trivial marks to lower edge else bright and firm. The paper both colored and white is Italian Tiziano mould-made at Fabriano mill. The types are Veronese Monotype and handset and Twentieth Century handset. The type on paper and the photopolymer plates for the drawings on mylar were printed by letterpress. The book is bound in an anodized aluminum ring binding with U-posts allowing the leaves to be turned over in sequence. A back cover supports four U-posts a lid has four slots through which the U-posts rise and a locking pin of aluminum rod slips through the hoops securing the lid to the base. The binding was fabricated by Paul Sheet Metal Works in San Francisco. The titling is screen-printed onto a side of the lid. Includes the original cardboard mailing carton. . Arion Press hardcover

Printed wrappers paper still supple. Owner's signature of author and critic Michele Cantarella a leading anti-fascist Italian expatriate on the cover of one issue and three issues with a bit of pencilled marginal bracketing by him. Modest toning wear and soil a few tiny tears at the spine ends the first five issues with the pages somewhat toned and occasional very light foxing mostly confined to the first and last leaves a nice very good or better run of this somewhat delicate Italian literary magazine that featured two publishers and three editors during this time period. Of particular note is the inclusion of "Angoscia" "Anguish" later known as "Anguish in the Barracks" in issue 16 a very early possibly the earliest published story by Italo Calvino predating his first book by two years. The final issue prints a "Referendum" of four questions for poets about their work and claim that they have already received responses from Eugenio Montale Cesare Pavesi Corrado Alvaro and others and will begin publishing their responses in the next issue but the magazine ceased publication with No. 17/18. Red paper boards over yellow cloth spine stamped in black. Very Good with soiling fading and wear light staining to textblock edges slightly effecting margins. Stray pen marks to several pages. Dust jacket rubbed nicked and with a vertical crease down the spine. <p>A peculiar hybrid of Calvino's meta novel. The recipient Patchy Wheatley was the director and producer of Bookmark presented by Ian Hamilton. Running three seasons the first episode of season three featured "Meeting Mr. Palomar" an interview with the reclusive Italian author discussing his shy nature and fictional works. 1956843London: Collins 1956. Original dustjacket artwork for the First British Edition of Calvino's first novel. The novel told from a child's perspective paints the trauma of war torn Italy using a variety of impressive characters namely a young boy and his teenage sister who are depicted on the jacket. The only artwork we have seen associated with one of Calvino's books and quite dazzling in comparison to its American counterpart. Gouache on artboard with the image measuring 9.5 X 12 inches and the board measuring 10.5 X 15 inches; signed by artist Trevor Denning near lower right corner. Brief pencilled notation regarding measurments on the lower margin with the publisher author and translator's names overlaid and mounted to the piece on thick cardstock. The printers' instruction sheet for Collins is handwritten on pink stock affixed on verso. Collins unknown

Pepe Fernández associated with Ernesto Guevara in the 1940s and later befriended Silvina Ocampo Adolfo Bioy Casares Jorge Luis Borges Italo Calvino and Louis Aragon. Best known for his portraits of Borges he was also the photographer of many artists such as Pablo Neruda Mikis Theodorakis Astor Piazzolla and actors including Paul Newman Patrick Dewaere Julie Christie. He met Italo Calvino in Paris in 1964 and immediately became one of his closest friends and his official portraitist. His photographs illustrate several editions of the great Italian novelist.
