New York Daily News; 8vo; 24 -9-16 pages; Original issue of this NYC tabloid newspaper for Monday June 16 1924. There are two photographs of note at the top of the front page -- halftone reproductions of photographs. One shows women kneeling in their black robes at a KKK rally in Oceanside Long Island -- attended by 10000. The other photo shows for the first time a Klan Baptism. 8 month-old William Stonely is shown with officiants and his parents mother is shown at the far right. All the adults are in full Klan robes. The infant's face not in keeping with KKK practice is shown uncovered -- but he does appear to sport a little peaked hood atop his head. The historic significance of these KKK photographs is corroborated by the preservation of original prints of each of the two images in the Library of Congress. Web addresses upon request. The LC incidentally copies a pencil note on the typed press tag attached to the Baptism photograph and cites the infant's name as "William Stanley." The 'Daily News' supplies the information not included in the Library of Congress description that the infant's parents are shown including his be-robed mother. The photographs are attributed to the "Triangle Photo Service" -- by both this newspaper and the LC. Bill Brennan by the way was a popular and accomplished heavyweight boxer who fought a title bout with Jack Dempsey in Madison Square Garden which resulted in his twelfth-round knockout on December 14 1920 Brennan fouht most of the best heavyweights of his time. He bought a bar with his share of the Dempsey Title purse -- "Club Tia Juana" on 171st Street in the Washington Heights. He evidently threw out a couple of tough guys who informed him that he was buying the "wrong mob's beer." After tossing them out Brennan was later called outside by another guy with whom he was unfamiliar and a gunman standing nearby pulled a gun and shot him twice. He was 30 years old. Photos of the two guys charged with the shooting appear on the front page -- details on page 2. Our copy of this 102 year-old paper is tone and a bit fragile. Alas it is missing four leaves at the center -- pages 9-16. The news at the front is all there and the Sports section for which the 'Daily News" is famous then and now -- is intact on the final pages 17-24 at the rear is intact. There is an account of the sailing of the American Team to the Olympics an account of a Giants victory before 40000 fans -- and a short summary of a victory of the Detroit Tigers against the league co-leading Boston Red Sox. The aging star Ty Cobb recorded five hits two doubles in his six plate appearances in that contest -- which allowed the Yankees to re-take sole possession of the American League's lead. There is also a tiny photo of Harry K.Thaw murderer of Stanford White and Thaw's mother with an account claiming that Thaw newly released from confinement in an Asylum expressed a desire never again to leave his mother's side. .
