1925W1862New York: Unpublished 1925. Original photograph by the Australian-American photographer Anton Bruehl 1900-1982. A vintage circa 1925 gelatin silver print mounted on cardstock. 7 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches. The photograph is unsigned but the composition of the still-life photo includes a roughly torn piece of paper that includes the caption that was handwritten by the photographer and is signed "Greetings Anton Bruehl." In 1919 the Australian born Bruehl along with his brother and parents emigrated to the United States where he worked for Western Electric as an electrical engineer until an exhibition of Clarence H. White's photographs persuaded him to change professions. In 1924 he enrolled in White's photography school and by the next year was hired to teach in the school. In a 1976 article for Image magazine landscape photographer Joe Deal observed that "Anton Bruehl's background in engineering and love of machine forms in combination with his training under Clarence White resulted in still life photographs which give the satisfaction of well-resolved formal problems and portraits choreographed with the rhythm and movement characteristic of the age." Bruehl's early black and white still-life photographs are much more scarce than his later color images and they seldom come on the market. The photograph is clean and bright with just a hint of edgewear and a 1-inch crease line at the bottom edge. . First Edition. Single Sheet. Collectible-Very Good. Illus. by Anton Bruehl. 7 1/2" X 5 1/2". Photo. Unpublished

19581682<p>This is a rare lithograph of the <em>St Roch</em> which now sits in the Vancouver Maritime Museum. It is a black and white painting done by maritime artist Noel Day and published by Vancouver printer Frank Coan. It was produced between 1956 and 1961. It is framed under glass with a total size of 16 ¾" x 12 ½".</p><p>If you like I can remove the piece from the frame and mail it in a tube.</p><p><strong>About the <em>St. Roch</em>:</strong></p><p>The <em>St. Roch</em> was the first vessel to traverse the Northwest Passage from west to east 1940-1942 the first to complete the passage in one season 1944 and the first to circumnavigate North America. She was built in BC named after a parish in Quebec captained by a Norwegian immigrant crewed by farm boys from across Canada and helped by the Inuit. She has an unusual design featuring thick Douglas Fir planks reinforced with heavy beams to withstand ice pressure and an outer shell made of some of the hardest wood in the world Australian Eucalyptus or "iron bark".</p><p>Between 1928 and 1954 she logged tens of thousands of miles in the Arctic acting as a floating RCMP. As a supply ship a patrol vessel and a transport the <em>St. Roch</em> was the only link between the scattered northern communities.</p><p>For many years it had been the dream of Captain Henry Larsen to cross the Northwest Passage just as Roald Amundsen had for the first time in the <em>Goja</em> in 1903. Finally with the outbreak of the WWII and the Nazi invasion of Denmark Greenland the opportunity presented itself. Launched on its famous voyage on a secret mission to cross the Arctic during the war this amazing vessel traveled through treacherous and uncharted waters to cross the Northwest Passage and the high Arctic with only a small crew of steadfast men who had to rely on their skill talent and luck. Incredibly they managed to make the crossing not once but twice and in only 86 days.</p><p><em>Please note that for the stated delivery price I only ship to Canada and the continental USA. If you are outside of these areas please request a shipping quote <strong>BEFORE</strong> purchasing.</em></p><p><em>If you buy more than one item I am happy to combine shipping.</em></p> Frank Coan

199046520<p>London : Frederick Muller 1990. First edition. A curious late Raven memoir apparently soon withdrawn from publication having been subjected to the most savage reviews he can ever have experienced - by Craig Brown Christopher Hitchens Humphrey Carpenter and not least by Auberon Waugh - "With a shock we realise that Raven is writing about real people albeit dead ones . I am sorry to be pompous but this simply won't do . These were all people that I knew . Forget about libel or good taste or the normal standards of civilised reticence . The interesting thing is not that he should have had these experiences but that he should choose to say he has and that he should find a publisher prepared to print them". Medium 8vo 25cm. x190viiipp. Original orange boards blocked and lettered in black; text a little tanned as usual but otherwise a very good copy in the dust-jacket - the jacket a little faded at spine but otherwise also very good.</p> London : Frederick Muller, (1990). hardcover

2023384020Taschen 2023. 1st. Hardcover. Very Good/None. Hardcover 142 pages. In the late 1910s in a Europe ravaged by World War I Danish illustrator Kay Nielsen put the finishing touches on his illustrations of A Thousand and One Nights. The results are considered masterpieces of early 20th-century illustration: bursting with sumptuous colors of deep blues reds and gold leaf and evoking all the magic of this legendary collection of Indo-Persian and Arabic folktales compiled between the 8th and 13th centuries. However publishers retreated from Nielsen's project in the financially strapped postwar climate and the publication never happened. A rising star Nielsen moved on to other work. This world heritage classic's spectacular pen ink and watercolor images remained under lock and key for 40 years. Published just once in the 1970s the illustrations were rescued from oblivion after Nielsen's death in 1957 and are now held by the UCLA Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles the Art Institute of Chicago and in two private collections. This publication is a unique compilation of fine art prints and stunning illustrations reproduced directly from Nielsen's original watercolors—the only complete set of his extraordinary drawings to have survived. The book features descriptions of all of the images and three generously illustrated essays on the making of this series the origin of Nielsen's unique imagery and a history of the tales. In addition it shows many unpublished or rarely seen artworks by Nielsen and intricate black-and-white drawings Nielsen created for the original publication. Text in English German and French.
