9 p. Printed on the rectos only + Frontis and other illustrations. 12mo. Original full cloth binding, stamped in gold. Original dust jacket. Privately printed for George Zabriskie as a Christmas greeting presented to Mrs. (David) Van Dusen, signed by Zabriskie. George Albert Zabriskie (1860-1954) was President of the New York Historical Society from 1939-1947, and Honorary President from 1948 until his death in 1954. He was a great enthusiast of fine books and book binding, and an expert amateur hand-tooler and finisher of books. Though he lived in New York City, he "wintered" in Florida, and issued these charming Christmas keepsakes from his home: "The Doldrums" a Mission-Spanish Revival residence designed by Albert Pierce. Phips was a hunter of sunken treasure who won big. In 1688 Phips returned to London with his ships ladened with 37,538 pounds of pieces of eight, 25 pounds of gold and 2,755 pounds of silver. One tenth of this treasure went to the king, one sixteenth to Phips and the rest to his multitude of investors. He was knighted and appointed the first Royal Governor of Massachusetts. A bright copy of a nice little keepsake. W69

The one self-taught and truly great American writer: William Faulkner did NOT even finish high school left at the age of fifteen to work. Then he began almost uninterruptedly thereafter - and improbably in our age of endless distractions - to write. "In these novels we can track Faulkner's extraordinary evolution as he discovers and masters the mode and matter of his greatest works" The Library of America. The entire oeuvre consists of six volumes in all and is definitively regarded as one of the "high spots" in The Library of America Series. An absolute "must-have" title for William Faulkner collectors. This copy of Volume Five is a great collection. This is one of few copies of the First Library of America Slipcased Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean crisp and bright. Please note: The First Slipcased Edition was distributed to libraries and LOA subscribers only. None of the copies was sold to the public. Copies available online have serious flaws "Good" "Very Good" and are in multiple subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. Winner of the Nobel Prize For Literature in 1950. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine copy. SEE ALSO OTHER WILLIAM FAULKNER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG. ISBN 1931082898.
