Bound with this: Potier D'etain Bimblotier consisting of a description of 6 plates all of which are present. <br /> <br /> Next grouping: Following this are 4 plates with no description page with titles like "Travail du Bas au Metier". Planche # III IV V VI.<br /> Next Grouping: "Forge des Ancres" anchor forging. Consisting of a description of 13 plates all of which are present.<br /> <br /> Next Grouping: "Potier de Terre". Consisting of a description of 11 plates all are present. <br /> <br /> In general the plates are in nice condition with no tearing. These are the plates with descriptions no binding and they are not a complete set. The original Encyclopédie was published in 17 volumes with 11 volumes of plates published by 1772. Later printings did not include plates to cut down the costs and allow a wider audience to read the work. This was the first encyclopedia to describe the mechanical arts and also the first to include contributions from many important named contributors. It grew as a project into a massive project which attempted to collect human knowledge from a rationalistic perspective instead of by nature or theology. In organizing knowledge from a position where human reason was paramount the supremacy of the Church was imperiled. As a result the Encyclopedie was widely controversial and placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum by the Catholic Church. In discussing fundamental philosophical issues such as on political authority and natural rights articles in the Encyclopedie shifted the basis of governmental authority from the divine right of Kings to radical concepts popular consent was the basis of legitimacy and the ideals of a social contract. The work was banned by the King of France. It spread the foundational ideas of the French Revolution and enlightenment thinkers. The Encyclopedia a monumental work edited by Denis Diderot and Jean Le Rond d'Alembert was a groundbreaking endeavour that aimed to systematically catalogue all human knowledge spanning 28 volumes published between 1751 and 1772. As a product of the Enlightenment era the Encyclopedia embodies the spirit of rational inquiry intellectual exchange and the scientific method as its contributors known as encyclopedists sought to understand the world through reason and empirical evidence. The editors Diderot and d'Alembert defined their goal : "As an Encyclopedia it is to define as well as possible the order and structure of human knowledge. As a Reasoned Dictionary of the Sciences Arts and Trades it is to contain the general principles that form the basis of each science and each art liberal or mechanical and the most essential facts that make up the body and substance of each". First Edition of the Correspondance Inédite edited by Chéron and Thory. The German Baron Grimm was introduced to Parisian literary society through his friendship with Jean Jacques Rousseau and this led to a close association with the Encyclopédistes in particular with Denis Diderot. In 1753 he began a literary correspondence with various German sovereigns which he managed to carry on during temporary absences from France with the help of Diderot and Mme dÉpinay. The correspondence consisted of two letters a month until 1773 and Grimm eventually counted among his subscribers Catherine II of Russia Stanislas Poniatowski King of Poland and many princes of the smaller German states. His correspondence which embraces the entire period from 1753 to 1790 was strictly confidential and was not divulged during his lifetime. It is one of the most celebrated of the eighteenth century. "At first Grimm contented himself with enumerating the chief current views in literature and art and indicating very slightly the contents of the principal new books but gradually his criticism became more extended and trenchant and he touched on nearly every subject political literary artistic social and religious which interested the Parisian society of the time. His notices of contemporaries are somewhat severe and he exhibits the foibles and selfishness of the society in which he moved; but he was unbiased in his literary judgments and time has only served to confirm his criticisms. In style and manner of expression he is thoroughly French. He is generally somewhat cold in his appreciation but his literary taste is delicate and subtle; and it was the opinion of Sainte-Beuve that the quality of his thought in his best moments will compare not unfavourably even with that of Voltaire.
