"Rather a paraphrase than a translation of Lord Shaftesbury's An Inquiry Concerning Virtue and Merit. Yet it is a very important work indeed for the growth and development of his thought. It was Diderot who furnished the RÈflexions in a preliminary discours and lengthy footnotes to which students of Diderot now turn for precious indications of the unfolding of his ideas. It will be noticed that the French version is anonymous neither Shaftesbury's name nor that of the translator was mentioned. The reason was that there was some danger involved in presenting to the French public a work that declared so boldly for the existence of a natural morality independant of any particular religion or church" Arthur M. Diderot adapted "Shaftesbury's text pretty freely adding his own interjections and digressions" - Furman. Diderot's Essai challenged the doctrine of the church which required that it be published anonymously and with a false imprint. The only evidence of authorship are the initials "M. S." in the title. Shaftesbury's essays like Lucretius's De Rerum Natura had an important influence on the young Diderot. 1771003772Paris 1771. First Edition. Buckram cloth folio folder. . Near Fine. Folio 38.5 by 25 cm with two double plates 50 cm wide and the triple plate 68 cm wide. The six plates show the steps in the casting of massive equestrian statues one of the staples of public monuments before the twentieth century. As the rule with the plates in the Diderot and d'Alembert Encylcopedie though the plates are handsome works of art transcending their pedagogic purpose and the images here have an element of the curious and novel that separates them from more traditional equestrian artwork. The plates and their two page textual description that precedes them were carefully removed from the larger volume and remain attached to each other like a thinner brochure. Other than occasional light and insignificant soiling and minor age toning the plates are clean and fresh. The folder made to house them is of a modern buckram cloth decidedly utilitarian in appearance but not unattractive with their multi-color ribbon ties.

hardcover books
