This is a singular volume from an antique set of "Dickens's Works." The stories in this volume are as follows: "Barnaby Rudge" 1875"A Tale of Two Cities" 1875 and "Great Expectations" 1876. The volume features both in-text and full-page illustrations throughout by J. Barnard F.A. Fraser and "American and English Artists." Nicely bound in three-quarter leather with five raised bands and gilt lettering on the spine. All edges of the text block are stained red.<br /><br />Condition:<br />Some mottling to the cloth on the front and back covers. The front cover lifts up from the text block just a bit. Bright gilt lettering on the spine. Light rubbing to the leather at the top cover corner tips. The top-right corner of the Barnaby Rudge title page has torn away. There is a crack at the front hinge between the end paper and pastedown - despite the crack the front cover is still firmly attached and is not shaky. The back cover is firmly attached. Mild foxing to the text pages though heavier foxing on the first few and last few pages. Page 49 in Great Expectations has light staining at the outer edge. Pages 32 & 33 in Barnaby Rudge have some stains at the bottom edges. Overall the book is in Good condition.</p> New York Book Concern, Harper & Brothers hardcover

Tight binding with no loose pages. There is a partial crack at the front hinge 2" up from the bottom between the title page and end paper. The title page for "Library of Entertaining Miscellanies" has been sewn in at the front before the "Home and Social Philosophy" title page. Mild foxing of preliminary pages; nickel-sized stain spot at the outer edge of pages 24-29.the remaining pages are clean. Page 19 has "Part of it was forgotten" written neatly in pencil in old handwriting at the outer margin; old name written in pencil on the front end paper. There is an insignificant crack at the hinge between pages 24 and 25 despite the crack the front cover is still firmly attached. G.P. Putnam and Company hardcover

Owing to the abruptness of the hill behind the town there is a street along the edge of a bluff from which you can look directly down upon all that part of the city which lies low near the level of the rivers. On the evening of this dark day we were conducted to the edge of the abyss and looked over the iron railing upon the most striking spectacle we ever beheld. The entire space lying between the hills was filled with blackest smoke from out of which the hidden chimneys sent forth tongues of flame while from the depths of the abyss came up the noise of hundreds of steam-hammers. There would be moments when no flames were visible; but soon the wind would force the smoky curtains aside and the whole black expanse would be dimly lighted with dull wreaths of fire. It is an unprofitable business view-hunting; but if any one would enjoy a spectacle as striking as Niagara he may do so by simply walking up a long hill to Cliff Street in Pittsburg and looking over into—hell with the lid taken off. Such is the kind of day of which Pittsburg boasts. The first feeling of the stranger is one of compassion for the people who are compelled to live in such an atmosphere. When hard pressed a son of Pittsburg will not deny that the smoke has its inconveniences. He admits that it does prevent some inconsiderate people from living there who but for the prejudice against smoke in which they have been educated would become residents of the place. Two volumes of Charles Dickens works bound together in brown cloth. Very scarce. Comprised of 'American Notes and Reprinted Pieces' 1870 and 'The Uncommercial Traveller' 1869.'American Notes' is a travelogue by Dickens documenting his experiences in North America in 1842. With various other reprinted pieces. In this particular edition there are seven full-page illustrations. Lacking one plate. 'The Uncommercial Traveller' contains a series of sketches and reminiscences originally published between 1860 and 1861 in Dickens' journal 'All the Year Round'. With three plates present lacking one. With the ink inscription of J. I Huxley to the first page of 'American Notes'. In a brown cloth binding. Externally sound with slight rubbing to the extremities and light bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Darkening to the spine and marking to cloth. Hinges are strained particularly to the front with cords visible. Bookseller blindstamp to front endpaper. Internally generally firmly bound a little tender in places such as between 'American Notes' and 'The Uncommercial Traveller'. Pages bright and clean with the odd spot to the first and last pages.
