Volume ONE only. 8vo publisher's rose-red cloth paper spine label very good light wear spine darkened small private library label at bottom of spine probably removable bookplate on pastedown text shows some foxing throughout and book has a musty odor for longtime farmhouse storage. The English edition published by Bentley came out in the same year with plates by Cruikshank but this American edition is not illustrated. Grimaldi was the most popular entertainer of the Regency era a dancer harlequin and comedian. After Grimaldi's death in 1837 Charles Dickens was invited by Richard Bentley to edit and improve Thomas Egerton Wilks's clumsily written life of Grimaldi which had been based on the clown's own notes which Dickens did under his regular nom de plume "Boz". As a child Dickens saw Grimaldi perform at the Star Theatre Rochester in 1820. The book sold well to Dickens' surprise. Very uncommon in the American edition. Carey, Lea & Blanchard hardcover
