1852002723Londion: Bradbury and Evans 1852. Three volume set of this early Dickens title dated 1852 1853 1854 respectively. All first editions/first issues in original reddish brown cloth. Marbled endpapers and all edges marbled. Backstrips stamped in gold lettering inside elaborate shield shaped ornamental design. Boards stamped in blind front and rear and gilt motif of Alfred reading to his mother in center on each cover. Each volume illustrated with frontispiece by W. Topham. Minor sunning to backstrips and volume III has two minute punctures to cloth at upper and lower backstrip. Minor wear to corners as usual and incidental age soiling to cloth. Former owner's bookplate in each volume reads: "J. Steele Coldstream Guards". Overall a superior set in the original cloth which is becoming much more difficult to find. 1854143931854. in Two Volumes. Boston: Jenks Hickling & Swan 1854. Original blind-stamped dark brown cloth with gilt-decorated spines. Early American edition just possibly the first complete one. Since Harper published the two volumes of its edition separately in March 1853 and in March 1854 so dated on the title pages it is considered to be the first American edition. The date in 1854 when these two Boston volumes were published is unknown so it is possible that this two-volume Boston edition came out earlier in 1854 than Harper's second volume. Jenks Hickling & Swan was a very "fluid" enterprise at the time such that their 1856 and 1857 two-volumes-in-one printings would be by Hickling Swan & Brown and their 1861 two-in-one printing would be by Swan Brewer & Tileston. This set is in very good-plus condition a few small holes in the cloth mainly at extremities or at joints; the gilt on the spines is unusually bright. Smith pp 116-119; Carr UTexas B500 in blue cloth; not cited by Podeschi. Provenance: both front free endpapers bear not only a contemporary signature but also the penciled signature of Dickens bibliographer Walter Smith; in fact this very copy is the one pictured on pages 117 and 118 of his book. unknown books

Drake description.<br/><br/>As the only book Dickens wrote specifically for children it occupies a unique place in his' oeuvre. "Dickens' intention for the book was made manifest in the dedication at the beginning of the first volume to his 'own dear children: Whom I hope it may help bye-and-bye to read with interest larger and better books on the same subject.' This makes the purpose clear. Dickens did not intend the book to supplant or rival those books by Keightley or Macaulay that preceded it. The book rather is intended by Dickens as an exciting or interesting study of the subject which will whet his children's -- and other children's -- appetites for English history and is designed to act as a springboard to discovery" Tearle. Uniformly bound in striking full crimson morocco by George Bayntun early twentieth century; stamped "Bayntun Bath England" on the turn-ins with gilt holly leaf motifs lettering fillet borders dentelles and edges. Hand-marbled endpapers. The original cloth covers are bound in at the rear. The first two were published by Chapman & Hall; the last three by Bradbury & Evans. <br /><br />All five are first impressions but with mixed issue points. Edition and condition details provided below in separate sections.</p><p><strong>Edition Details</strong></p><ol><li><strong>A Christmas Carol. </strong>First impression with the title page dated 1843 printed in blue and red but faded; see condition section and no edition statement. The textual errors remain uncorrected which distinguishes the first impression from all later impressions collated by hand against all entries in Smith II:4. Period faint after "gloom" on p 21 noted by Smith in a minority of first editions. Second state of the chapter headings with the numbers spelled out "Stave One". Second issue of the original cloth cover: the "D" in "Dickens" lacks the upper serif and the closest gap between the wreath and blindstamping is 12-13 mm. Smith II:9.</li></ol><p><strong>Condition Details</strong> Small octavos approximately 6.5 x 4.25 inches. Bindings tight; leather boards supple gilt bright overall with minor losses to edges and gilt fillet borders on the front and rear boards. A few minor isolated darker spots rubbing and shallow surface indentations from handling. No bookplates underlining or prior owner markings. Contents largely clean with only an occasional light stain or age spot. All volumes retain their original cloth covers and spines bound in at the rear. Some leaves show signs of gentle cleaning most noticeably the title page of <em>A Christmas Carol</em> resulting in fading especially of the blue ink and very subtly to the vignette titles of other volumes without discernable fading. Likely this was done by Bayntun himself at the time of rebinding as similar treatment has been observed in his other bindings including another copy of <em>A Christmas Carol</em> and was standard practice of the era see Zaehnsdorf 1890; Cockerell 1901. <em>A Christmas Carol</em> shows a small dent to the fore-edge of the text block a marginal chip to the illustration page of the Ghost of Christmas Present and a discreetly mended tear to the margin of that same leaf neither flaw affects the image as shown. All four plate leaves are lightly tanned. Bound without the terminal ad leaf as common else complete. In the other four volumes the ad leaves are present and the illustration plates are all complete intact and undamaged. The title vignettes of The Haunted Man are noticeably darkened and stained mainly on the edges. Additional pictures available upon request. A finely preserved and visually striking set.</p><p><strong>Binder Note</strong></p><p>The turn-ins are gilt-stamped "Bayntun Bath England" confirming the work predates the firm's 1939 acquisition of Riviere. The Bayntun-Riviere bindery remains one of the most celebrated of the twentieth century known for its technical precision and visual elegance and continues to operate under the same name today.</p><p>-</p><p><em>"I will honour Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year."</em> — A Christmas Carol Stave IV</p><p>In 1843 desperate for income and determined to make a moral statement Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in six weeks and paid for its production himself. He rejected cheap formats insisting on gilt-edged pages hand-colored illustrations and cloth boards stamped in gold. Although the first impression sold out within days high production costs and disputes over profits left him with little return. Each of the Christmas books that followed carried the same intent: to unite moral purpose with visual warmth and seasonal charm. Dickens wanted his Christmas books to be beautiful. 18432158<p>It is bound as one book which makes me uncertain however. <br />I think that this is the tauhe actual first rare state of A christmas carol published 1843 by Tauchnitz from 1846 actually since all are bound together rare regardless. <br />The book is very good. Free from writing inside and stains. The original binding is beautiful. <br />It is also bound with the haunted man and the chimes later though.<br />The book has all of the following first edition identifiers as seen in my further description</p><p>There is a later Tauchnitz edition with 1843 as the printing year but it does not have the 78 pages of the genuine first edition nor the text "Edition sanctioned by the Author" on the title page or the shortened version of the title page publisher where the correct one is "Leipzig Bernh. jun. Tauchnitz 3 Jun. Tauchnitz".
