03754London: Bradbury & Evans 1848. Time Consoler of Affliction and Softener of Anger"
Scarce in the 'Primary' Cloth Binding

DICKENS Charles. Dombey and Son. London: Bradbury & Evans 1848.

First edition first issue with the 'eight-line errata' following all but a very few of the points in Smith in book form of Dickens' seventh novel bound from the original monthly parts with stab-holes present in the inner margins of gatherings. Octavo 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 in; 222 x 138 mm. xvi 1 errata 1 blank 624 pp. Engraved frontispiece titlepage and thirty-eight plates after Hablot K. Browne "Phiz" including the 'dark' plate "On the Dark Road" facing p. 547.

Some of the plates with light foxing mainly marginal otherwise a very clean and partially uncut example.

Publisher's 'primary' binding of moderate olive-green fine-diaper grain cloth; the front and back covers entirely stamped in blind with a three-line border which encloses a rectangular frame that occupies the length of the covers. The frame contains an ornament of leaves and stems in each corner and a chain-like design that runs along its inner edge; each segment of the chain encloses a four-headed flower and is bordered by a nipple. The spine is lettered in gilt and stamped in blind with a thick band at its top and bottom and four rectangular panels. Original pale orange-yellow coated endpapers. With nearly all of the 'internal flaws' mentioned by Smith uncorrected. Front joint head and tail of spine and inner hinges expertly and almost invisibly repaired spine slightly faded. An excellent example far better than is usually seen of this now hard to find Dickens novel in the original cloth.

"Dombey and Son originally appeared in twenty numbers bound in nineteen monthly parts the last forming a double number from October 1846 - April 1848. It was published in book form on April 12 1848. at 21s.

Dombey and Son contains the first published example of a so-called dark plate which was created by a machine process that tinted the etched plate and heightened its black-and-white contrast. The one dark plate in Dombey and Son is "On the Dark Road" p. 547. The smooth blending of light and shadow on this illustration vividly contrasts it with the other illustrations in the novel and is a fine example of the dark plate process." 18482883London: Bradbury and Evans 1848. First edition. Near Fine. Finely bound by Morrell in three-quarter green morocco all edges gilt spines with intricate details and raised bands marbled end papers. An excellent copy overall with four additional portrait plates bound in depicting characters from the novel.

Dombey and Son tackles a number of key themes that appear throughout Dickens' authorial career -- concerns about family duty class position child welfare and the dangers of arranged marriages in particular. As the titular Dombey builds his shipping company he fantasizes that his son will someday take over the business and continue his legacy. But England is changing rapidly due to the effects of industrialization and its effects ripple throughout Victorian culture. One symbol of industrialization's promise and its perils is the railroad. In chapter six Dickens calls the railroad's impact a "great earthquake." Dombey and Son grapples with the effects of industrialization and the railroad is one of the novel's symbols for this momentous era. Near Fine. Bradbury and Evans unknown books

1858001775London: Bradbury & Evans 1858. Dickens Charles. DOMBEY AND SON. Frontispiece by H. K. Browne 'Phiz'. London: Bradbury & Evans 1858. Original blind-stamped green publisher's cloth with spines elaborately decorated in gilt. First "Cheap" Edition first issue from the first and most important collected works of Dickens with in this case a 2pp new introduction and a specially commissioned new frontispiece. Begun in 1847 with works already published Dickens added further titles as he went along. Most were published by Chapman & Hall however this particular title belonged to Bradbury & Evans yet both provided a book nearly identical in design. Despite being called "cheap" Dickens made sure that these volumes were just as high quality in texture and ornamentation as his first editions; there are 17 volumes in total all are rarely seen in fine condition. A FINE copy quite rare in this splendid condition spine a trifle browned as almost always with this olive-green cloth trifling wear to the extremities armorial bookplate of Henry Smith and blind-stamp of W. H. Smith. Bright gilt excellent eye appeal. . First Edition Thus. Decorative Cloth. Fine. Illus. by H. K. Browne "Phiz". Bradbury & Evans Hardcover books

Dombey and Son "was well received by its readers and is considered to be the first novel that reflects Dickens's artistic maturity. Dickens told his first biographer 'It was to do with Pride what its predecessor Martin Chuzzlewit has done with Selfishness" Schlicke 280. The work "has a sense of the numinous is more profoundly touched by the sense of last things than any of Dickens' previous novels. It is larger in conception so that human life is seen in terms of its beginning and its end so that grief and forgiveness become more powerful forces within it. Dickens is aware of its status as art and provides here a simulacrum of human life touched by majesty and purpose" Ackroyd 526. The original serials contain the first of Browne's "dark plates" "On the dark Road" in part 18 created by the engraver's lining machine and roulettes that tint the etched plate creating heightened contrast Johannsen Phiz 309. 184619908London: Bradbury and Evans 1846-48 1846. First edition parts issue. Hatton & Cleaver pages 227-250. This set agrees with H&C's description except that in part 11 there is no ad for Letts & Son and the ad for Kaye's Pills in part 12 varies slightly from the one they described. Two of the three misprints noted by H&C are present: part 11 page 324 "Capitan" for "Captain"; part 14 page 426 "if" is not present; on page 431 the page number is present in H&C's earliest issue the number is omitted. Plates foxed - as seems inevitable - some minor paper repairs to the corners of a few spines; a few wrappers slightly soiled and smudged; overall in very nice condition as issued enclosed in a chemise and cloth slipcase. 20 parts in 19 as issued 8vo original pictorial blue wrappers. 40 plates. A fine set of Dombey and Son in original parts completely unsophisticated as evidenced by the ink signature on each front wrapper of a contemporary reader Stephen Blair. Dickens novels in parts with the evidence of the contemporary ownership on each wrapper are scarce and such provenance is virtually the only way to establish that a set has not been sophisticated "married" or "made up.".

London: Bradbury and Evans, 1846-48 hardcover books
