The hair is mounted with a black and white photographic portrait and annotated frame size 13.5ins x 21ins. Accompanied by a smaller framed limited edition mezzotint portrait of Dickens with certificate dated 24th November 1913 8ins x 9.5ins Note: This comes with a receipt and certificate of authenticity from Fraser's Autographs together with a copy of the note of authenticity from Georgina Hogarth The book: A first edition with "S. Veller" at p. 342 and "this friends" at p. 400 and 'F' intact in headline of p. 342' engraved title in second state with "Tony Weller" on signboard. 43 engraved plates by R. Seymour and H. T. Duodecimo 38 pages dark blue cloth edgeworn spine rubbed <br/><br/>This is copy 12 of only 15 numbered copies which proofs of three states of the copperplate frontispiece engraving of the steamship "Britannia" from a total edition of 77 copies. Provenance: ex libris Beverly Chew: "The influence of such men as Robert Hoe William L. Andrews Theodore DeVinne S. P. Avery Charles B. Foote E. H. Holden and Beverly Chew on the collecting world has been great and their constant stand for all that is best in book-building has helped to mould American standards in such matters." - Introduction to the 1924 auction catalogue of Chews' library. This frontispiece was drawn by Clarkson Stanfield R.A. and engraved by Edwin Davis French from the original which was owned by Dickens. Dickens sailed in "Britannia" for his first visit to North America. The top cover features in gilt a facsimile of a portion of the holograph of Dickens' letter. Not in the Gimbel catalogue of Dickens. With other illustrations including a miniature engraving by E. D. French De Vinne Press hardcover

The original illustration signed by the artist for this humorous character portrait: "There was a hanger-on at that establishment a supernaturally preserved Druid I believe him to have been and to be still with long white hair and a flinty blue eye always looking afar off; who claimed to have been a shepherd and who seemed to be ever watching for the reappearance on the verge of the horizon of some ghostly flock of sheep that had been mutton for many ages. He was a man with a weird belief in him that no one could count the stones of Stonehenge twice and make the same number of them; likewise that any one who counted them three times nine times and then stood in the centre and said "I dare!" would behold a tremendous apparition and be stricken dead."
