Backstrip sunned neat crack in coated endsheet at gutter ca. 2 1/4" inner hinges slightly weak but sound engraved title foxed with lesser scattered foxing elsewhere otherwise an unusually nice copy the cloth bright and clean. First edition in book form with all the internal typographical "flaws" described by Smith. This copy is in Carter's binding C publisher's remainder binding which he describes as "the familiar rather dowdy binding of most of the single volume Dickens reprints" and "the rarest of the three" bindings found on DROOD. A solid VG copy. vii 1 190 2 pp. Adverts last 2 pp. Frontis & 12 inserted B&W plates by Luke Fildes corner stain to half just touching image portion of plate. 8vo. 9" scant x 5-3/4" <br/><br/>With a tipped-in apparently unpublished autograph note by the author in the third person on Gad's Hill Place letterhead dated Monday Twelfth October 1860 63: "In reply to Mr Donnell's letter Mr Charles Dickens begs to wish him all success. If Mr Dickens should have an opportunity of recommending him which he fears is not very likely he will most gladly do so remembering Mr Donnell for a good many years as one of the most obliging and attentive of Mr Truefitt's assistants". With accompanying envelope addressed to Donnell and small press cutting opposite stating that Donnell had shaved the Duke of Connaught in the early seventies and that this was incorrect as Donnell was not a barber but a wig maker and perfumer. First American Edition issued as No. 114 in Holt's "Leisure Hour Series." THE MUDFOG PAPERS had originally appeared in America in the 1830s in the American Bentley's Miscellany and one of them "The Public Life of Mr. Tulrumble" was included in an 1837 Lea & Blanchard collection of sketches; the other papers' first appearance in book form was as an appendix to Mackenzie's LIFE OF DICKENS Philadelphia 1870. It was not until 1880 however that THE MUDFOG PAPERS were published as a separate book by Bentley in England and by Holt in America. This is a very good-plus copy a little soiled as always with these cream-colored "Leisure Hour" volumes. Podeschi Yale D87. unknown books
