The plot focuses on the hardships courageously navigated by young Nicholas Nickleby after his father passes away.

The extra illustrations provided were drawn by Joseph Kenny Meadows 1790 - 1874 best known for his drawings published in Punch magazine. 1839CD118London: Chapman & Hall 1839 First edition. Illustrations by Hablot K. Browne "Phiz". Finely bound in 19th century full polished green calf spine lettered and decorated in gilt gilt turn-ins all edges gilt marbled endpapers. An excellent copy extremities lightly rubbed with the usual foxing and some staining to the plates text otherwise very clean and bright. A very attractive copy. Nicholas Nickleby is Dickens's third novel which he began writing while Oliver Twist was still in progress. Characteristic of Dickens's work Nicholas Nickleby is a whirlwind of social satire with a complex network of characters and plotlines. The book highlights the controversy that surrounded Yorkshire boarding schools in the 1830s as news stories brought to light the abuse and neglect that was common among these institutions known for accepting unwanted children from parents who paid high prices to send them anywhere they could. Dickens's villain Wackford Squeers was based on Walter Shaw the real-life headmaster of Bowes Academy one of the schools reported for allowing rampant abuse of its pupils. The book has since been adapted for theater television and film and remains one of Dickens's most well-known works. This first edition in book form was bound from the publisher's parts with the stab holes from the original wrappers present and all the points called for by Smith meaning that it is one of the earlier issues of the first edition. Furthermore this copy was bound from the earliest states of the publisher's parts for as Hatton and Cleaver note "There are two distinguishing features only which point out early printings from later issues:" the substitution of "visiter" for "sister" on page 123 and "latter" instead of "letter" on page 160; both of these errors were corrected while Nicholas Nickleby was issued in parts causing Smith to cite these points as "in some copies." This copy has both "visiter" and "latter" deeming it a scarce first edition bound from the first state of the publisher's parts. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. London: Chapman & Hall hardcover books
18393172London: Chapman and Hall 1839. First edition. Bound by Bayntun in three-quarter red calf over cloth boards all edges gilt. Spine a bid faded internally an excellent copy. Complete with the half-title and all 40 plates engraved by Phiz. Likely washed at the time of binding as most plates show little to no foxing. Most of Smith's internal flaws are found including the ones of pgs. 123 and 160 only found in the earliest copies bound from the parts.

Nicholas Nickleby Dickens' third novel was originally serialized in monthly parts then issued as a book in cloth. The publishers also had a small number of copies bound up in the present morocco both for presentation - a census of copies inscribed by Dickens on publication show them all to be in the green morocco binding - and for sale to the public at a higher price. "Dickens' third novel has always been a favourite with the general public. Indeed it was the book's huge sales that enabled Dickens to give up parliamentary reporting and become a full-time writer. The theatricality of the novel attracted new and more appreciative critical attention and it demonstrates the inextricable link between public and private" Bannerjee. A satire tackling the injustices faced by both women and men within the Victorian class system that relied so heavily the social status of the patriarch the novel follows Nicholas Nickleby as he seeks to support his mother and sister after his father's death. When Nicholas' father dies after losing all of the family's money it is up to the young man to emerge as the new and more morally sound patriarch. Dashing and likable Nicholas ultimately prevails dodging shady characters along the way and securing a respectable life in Devonshire for his extended family. A favorite among Dickens' works Nicholas Nickleby has been adapted into a much-loved film. Chapman and Hall unknown books
