Bixby had had privately printed in 1898 the "Charles Dickens and Maria Beadnell Private Correspondence" the originals of which were in his collection. The Dickens-Kolle letters were in Harry B. Smith's private collection. <br/>Henry William Kolle was an early friend of Dickens and a go-between during ther period of Dickens' infatuation with Maria Beadnell. Octavo size 102 pp. Limited edition of 483 copies printed for members of the Bibliophile Society plus a "limited number" printed for the editor. An illuminating correspondence between a young Charles Dickens and his friend William Henry Kolle who conducted notes back and forth between Dickens and his love the sister of Kolle's love interest and whom he subsequently married. <br/><br/>Contains two illustrations of Dickens one being the frontispiece an etching by W.H.W. Bickenell from the study in oil by W.R. Frith and the second a facsimile of a pencil sketch of Dickens; a facsimile reproduction of a single-page poem of 8 lines "To Ariel" signed by Dickens dated October of 1838 with a cartoon character drawn at the bottom of the page and several other facsimile letters.<br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Half ivory parchment with brown paper boards gilt lettering on the spine top edge rough-cut other edges uncut plain endpapers seal of the Bibliophile Society in red followed by the limitation statement within an etching of the Bibliophile Society's plate followed by facsimile of poem referred to above followed by tissue-guarded frontispiece and title page. Octavo size pagination: i-iv v-xii 1-90. Volume was issued with two slipcases the inner of ivory paper with a brown spine the outer of all brown paper with a paper spine label showing the title in black and the seal of the Bibliophile Society in red.<br/><br/>___CONDITION: Volume is overall in fine condition with a strong square text block solid hinges straight corners without rubbing and the interior is clean and bright; we are grading as near fine only due to a prior owner tasteful bookplate on the front pastedown scattered foxing and one very small smudge on the verso of the front free endpaper. 1876125031876. Comprising No Thoroughfare and The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices. Boston: William F. Gill & Company 1876. Original green cloth stamped in gilt. First Edition thus so combined into one volume. These were both collaborations between Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins brother of Dickens's daughter's husband -- "The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices" had appeared in Dickens's periodical Household Words in 1857 while "No Thoroughfare" had been the final 1867 Extra Christmas Number of Dickens's subsequent periodical All The Year Round. Each tale has its own Gill title page and each has a frontispiece illustration but the two stories are continuously paginated. Very good-plus condition minor wear at the extremities front endpaper cracking at the hinge. Podeschi Yale D75.
