New/new. monograph giving comprehensive examination of the gabare; a transport vessel used by the French Navy to supply the dockyards squadrons at sea and the colonies. Aptly named LE GROS VENTRE THE LARGE BELLY she was abandoned after the Kerguelen expedition in 1772 and sailing alone under the command of M.de St. Allouam; she went on the discover the west coast of Australia in March of 1772. Her drafts are preserved in Vincennes at the Service Historique de la Marine. An absolutely magnificent production package which includes: a 132 pp paperback book profusely illustrated including 29 captioned photos showing the model built by Vincent Davenas; plus 34 fold-out plates in the scale of 1/48; all of which are encased in a hardcover folder with dj. Half-title is present.Written by Frederic-Titeux Delacroix. Ink inscription to the front paste down dated 1837. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally generally smart with light rubbing to the spine and extremities and lighter rubbing to the boards resulting in a small patch of loss to the tail of the rear board. A few very light marks to the boards. Minor bumping to the extremities. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front paste down. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright with the occasional scattered spot. Faint tide mark to the bottom edge a little heavier to the final 40 pages of text. Very Good Gaume Freres hardcover
